i5-3570K + ASUS mboard

Thread Starter
I'm looking to upgrade my Athlon II x4 to get more RAM capacity, started out thinking I'd just buy 16 GB of RAM - my chip nor my MoBo can support more than 8, and then only DDR2. So I now have a good excuse to upgrade my MoBo & CPU to get the RAM my photo-processing wants.

I've been an AMD user for years but as I read the reviews the A10 APU and the FX-8150 are just no match for the new Ivy league i5 k-chip.

I'm looking at using the i5-3570K Chip coupled with an ASUS P8Z77-V LE PLUS LGA (or save $70 and go for the P8Z77-V LK?). I'll be doing a little more reading on those two MoBo's and make up my mind. Any thoughts on either of these board? I would like the Sabertooth Z77 but that is another $80 more - but it does look cool. Of course then I'd have to pick my RAM based on the colour of the stick. to match the camo board. smile.gif

I have a two year old 1 GB Nvidia GT9800 videocard in my system - can it be useful in this new rig? I use it to run two monitors, would I run one off of the MoBo display port and one off of the GT9800? Or should I just retire that card with the rest of the system.

I expect to salvage the case, power supply, optical drives, card reader, and hard drives. My case has an e-sata port on the front which is handy if I get the MoBo without a rear e-sata port. I've not had 6 gb e-sata ports before - will my older seagate esata drive run on that port - and will it run any faster? Just wondering.

My combo pricing for MoBo $390 for the LE Plus board (the V-LK version is $310).
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1065930

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/BDL_3570K_Z77VLK

I can always add a video card in the future - maybe something that can be paired up with my old card??

I was thinking of maxing the RAM out at 32 while the price of RAM is cheap, rather than go more sensible 16 GB, and then two years from now decide I need more RAM only to find the then "old DDR3" RAM is hard to find and what is available is pricey - just like the DDR2 I need to upgrade my current system is today - hence the excuse to retro-fit my box with new innards. Any RAM idea's - I'm thinking of DDR3-1600 just because I can. Currently 2x8 Corsair Vengance 2x8 is on for $70 at Memory Express, 4x8 of G-Skill Ripjaw Z is $138 at Newegg.ca

Opinions wanted.

This will be my first on my own build - all previous builds were done by my son with me 'assisting' - as in buy the parts and watching him. But how hard can it be???? cowboy.gif I have installed drives and such but never a new CPU & MoBo.

As for over-clocking - maybe I'll give that a try since the chip will do it - but I'm really going for the i5-3570K for the 4000 series graphics and Ivy League status. .

I'm no gamer by any stretch - and if and when I play games it is the SIMS or simiilar. Although I think I might like to try some of those driving games???? Anyway my most demanding app is Photoshop Elements and Premiere for now - I'll be adding Photoshop full version sometime in the future so I want to build in capacity for that.

your 9800gt will work well on that board,,,,,you may want to consider a I7 3770 if your gonna do a lot of photoshop, but its an extra 100$ for hyperthreading technology,,, ,,,I always buy memory x4 sticks,,,,it handy to have a little extra,,especially when its a good deal,,,i've had good luck with the gskill memory,,so far so good,,,,

That's a terrible price for an entry-level z77 + cpu
The Samsung RAM is very good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Memory+%28Desktop+Memory%29-_-SAMSUNG-_-20147096
G.Skill stuff is OK, too.
hmm.

All the newegg.com links just go to newegg.ca's main page - I'll see what I can find on the newegg.com site to see if it would be worthwhile to buy it in the states and have my son who lives in Mississippi mail it to me - but that makes any warranty or repair a royal pain.

I hate those auto-redirects - if I want to look at US pricing I should be allowed to look at US pricing, but Newegg detects that I'm browsing from Canada and wants to take me to Newegg.ca Finally found a way to get to newegg.com and what I found was that the price difference is minor - the i5-3570K for example is five dollars more expensive in Canada - not worth the cross border hassle to save $5.00. I will be looking at other Canadian retailers to see if I can find a better price but service is part of the picture. At least with Memory Express they have a physical store in Edmonton and promise to match e-retailers prices (Cdn e-Retailers). I've used this price match at bestbuy and was able to buy in the store for the same price as amazon.ca.

i agree i shop at memory express in calgary,,its nice to be able to take it back to the store to complain,,,your first choice the p8z77-3570k bundle is good,,,i went with the sabertooth z77,its good too,,the maximus v gene is another good one,,,but if your not gonna overclock, the p8z77 will be plenty enough
