Overclocking with ASUS M5A78L-M LX-PLUS Motherboard - Page 2

post #11 of 15
As for your moto (dixson01974) lol my phenom ii x6 hit 4.1 ghz smile.gif & with this board. I do want to upgrade soon as i can tho would this relatively cheap and seemingly vastly superior board be a good choice?

^ The extra phase on the 970 Pro3 may add a lot of useful capacity for keeping your x6 at 4.1Ghz reliably without throttling. However, I would hold out on the investment a bit more until you can afford a board that already has VRM cooling on it. Look for the 970 Extreme3 or the M5A97 for low-budget choices, or the GA-78LMT-USB3 if a 900-series chipset isn't a necessity.

On what do you measure your CPU clock rates? I have heard already from several users of this board and similar experiencing throttling with six-cores without overclock.
Perhaps you should check your performance with benchmarks.

I found out that the problem was the Northbridge gets too hot when I put any stress on the processor. I can see where that can cause stability issues. I will be upgrading to a new board and processor in the Spring, I will probably do a build video and log when I get the upgrades. Watch for me.

I seem to be stuck when attempting to overclock my AMD FX-4100 on my ASUS M5A78L-M LX-PLUS AM3+ motherboard. As the reviews show, I know it is possible to get a great overclock with the stock cooler on the FX-4100. I am running into a snag though. Whenever I overclock, be it x5 or x1 on the multiplier, the overclock fails and the Motherboards safety feature kicks in reverting the BIOS to the stock clock speeds and voltages. If anyone has any prior knowledge with this motherboard please lend me your brain cells. Thank you in advance!

Hows it going Jr? So I'm not quite sure if I hit the lotto with this board or not but from my experiences I've not had any issues OCing with this board, currently I have my 965 at 4.05GHz stable at 1.475v (I've ran Prime95 over 8 hours and had no errors on any cores). Also, I have built 5 rigs using this MoBo and although some have given me different results they all seem to OC somewhat alright, my board seems to OC the highest though (I guess since I've messed with it so much I know every little part of it! lol); Please be sure that you have taken the proper steps before OCing;

Have you:
1. Properly installed TIM w/ a decent aftermarket heatsink? (I personally use the card method and apply a nice thin layer across the entire processor face, running a Hyper 212 w/ Rosewill fans on each side of the heatsink)
2. Have enough airflow in your rig by installing fans? (I know I'm a bit of overkill for my rig, I have a total of 10 fans not including the ones on my Twin Frozr lol)
3. Have a decent PSU (imo 80+ Bronze is the minimum to OC; I'm running a CX500 and have 0 problems)

Personally my processor doesn't go over 50*C while running Prime even after 2+ hours!

Airflow ftw!!!! thumb.gif

I got my FX-4100 (On work rig, lol) to 4.7/4.6 on this board no issues and I keep it set at about 4-4.1 to play it safe on everyday use.
