Want to run 2nd HDD

Thread Starter
I an currently using a 300 GB SATA I HDD, Its only a cheap one so performance isnt fantastic but i have a spare 80 GB Maxtor diamond IDE HDD that i was wanting to use for backups. Could i run this as a slave from my DVD drive or will that not work?
If not if i just unplug the DVD drive while i perform the back up will that be ok?
Ive thought of buying an external case so i can perform backups via USB but cash is tight at the minute!
Also is there a way i could use the Maxtor IDE to boost performance or can i only do this with another SATA drive?

Thanks for any help

Technically, I think you CAN put them on the same IDE cable but it is NOT advised. Simultaneous access of both drives will slow down the hard drive transfer speed because:
1. Only one device can use the IDE at a time
2. Optical drives use a slower transfer speed than a hard drive will
3. The IDE controller will wait for the device to respond with data, so the drives would have to take turns using the bus

You should be able to hook up two IDE cables in your computer. One IDE cable for the HD and one for the Optical Drive, each cable with a master and slave. The boot drive should always be the primary master on the IDE. I think your system should look like this:
IDE1 - 80 GB Maxtor for backups
IDE2 - DVD Drive
SATA - 300 GB SATA drive for O/S

Yeah that would work but are you thinking about doing that because you only have one IDE cable or something? Or because the only time the 80GB would be accessed would be during a backup and you would obviously not be using the DVD drive at that time, so there would be no conflict like I described above? Personally I would give each their own IDE cable.

I think you are referring to a RAID setup. I do not have one of those set up on my comp but I believe they have to be identical drives for it to work. So no, I don't think you can do that with an IDE and a SATA drive.

Thanks for your help!,
I am not certain but i am pretty sure there is only 1 ide socket on the motherboard so i cant plug both in, I have got another ide cable so that isnt a problem. Im going to have a look now as i have got some fans to fit!

Thanks again, If I have got 2 sockets i will do as you advised but if I only have 1 wont it be ok to use the Maxtor as a slave to the DVD as a back up drive as the DVD wont be used during back up?, or will running it that way still slow down the drive?

Thanks,

I think you should be ok with keeping the backup drive and the DVD on the same channel since you will never want to use them at the same time. Then when you get some extra cash get the external enclosure and do the backups that way.

The HD will default to the slower and most likely ATA66 of the DVD drive but it will work and be handy for less accesed data.
If you unfirmiliar with HDD partitioning, check out my FAQ on it, it may come in handy next time you reload the OS

Ive fitted the Maxtor HDD and found i was wrong, there is another IDE channel so ive got it on there now. Im thinking of partitioning the Maxtor so i have say 40 GB for back up and 40 GB for less accessed data like the Duke said. Would this work ok?

Thanks for the help again guys!

Creating multiple partitions is a good idea, but will 40 GB be enough to back up your system? You might need the whole 80, if not right away but sometime in the future.
