Possibly studying abroad in Germany...but i cant live without a desktop HELP!

so, as the title suggests, i am potentially going to college abroad in germany to study video game design, and as i am living in America ATM, bringing my rig with me is out of the question. Also, the parts are sooo much cheaper here, that i'd hate to build a brand new pc there, as i would spend a lot of extra cash. I have been thinking about possible solutions to this for a while, and this is what i have come up with.

1. buy a basic AM3 rig off a craigslist-like website near my college, and simply buy some needed upgrades while i am still state side (GPU, ram, cooler, hard drives). I would then bring them over when i fly, and i would have a rig again.

2. buy a case off craigslist there, and either buy a mobo/cpu combo there, or potentially bring one over as well. The nice part here is i have a wider range of hardware to choose from, and hence, more control.

3. buy everything there, although i do not really think that would do me any good financially.

the other question is what parts are good to take, and whats better off being sold here? im probably going to salvage the ssd and 2tb hard drive from my current rig, and so i will most likely sell my parts on ebay or craigslist (unless i get enough rep here!) to pay for the parts that i buy here and there.

if anyone knows anything about buying computer parts in the E.U, or more specifically Germany, I'd be glad to hear it!

Dumb question: Why exactly can't you bring your entire rig? Is it to heavy or to big? Whats the problem? Parts here in the EU are somewhat more expensive (basically what costs $100 in the US will cost around 100€ in the EU) other then that I imagine buying parts is the same. Walk into a store and by the part.

There are many ways to fix this. 1 is ship it with you. 2 you can buy one off an American solider if you live near an army base. 3 or even try http://www.bookoo.com/. It is an army version of graigslist. I am living in germany atm well till saturday. Or even 4 build a mini one even cheaper to ship back and forth.

Edit:

Depending on where your going to live. Conrads, Saturn, Media Market, Amazon.de, ebay.de are a few places to look for parts.

Oh and just so you have all your info take the HDD if your not going to ship the pc. Win7 can be placed on a new mobo/cpu with out having to reinstall the OS.

well, yeah its a mid tower pc (cooler master 912) and i just dont think its financially beneficial to ship the entire thing..plus, its showing its age as well, so i would like to upgrade as well.

to put this is a bit more perspective, i can get a nice big case for 40 euros, and a am3 gigabyte 790x board with 8 gigs of ram, a alpenfohn nordsomething or other, and a phenom II 955 for 120 euros. all id need is like a psu, but i have a 800w antec, so i kind of want to bring it with me tongue.gif

Bring your GPU, SSD, CPU a HDD and anything else small and light weight. Then just buy the rest there. Motherboards, cases, PSUs are not that expensive compared to the parts mentioned above.

That's what i did when i moved to Norway. Worked out really well. The only expensive part might be a screen.

Well if you want to build a new rig then the obvious things to buy in the states are the small stuff. CPU, ram, HDD's. But if you intend to lug along the bigger stuff like the PSU, graphics card ect. then perhaps it would be smarter to just build a complete small form factor PC in the US and take it with you. You can fit plenty of power in to a Bitfenix prodigy.

thats basically my idea, except i was going to forgoe the cpu, as i was hoping to get a cpu/mobo combo, and well, with the psu, i guess i could sell the 800w one, and probably get away with a 600w there without much overhead. i have a lot of stuff i'm gonna be selling off (most of the stuff in my main rig and maybe my cherry bomb project, so if you need a PII 940 Be, or a 2gb 560ti, or a am2+ board with 140w cpu support pm me!)

yeah, except i need a bigger form factor pc, since i modify alot, and i need the space in a big case. like i said, i can get a nice roomy case really cheap, plus i was kind of thinking of building a Sleeper PC; so an old beige tower case, but kickass inside; since im in college and all, and i dont want anyone getting too jealous of my rig (theft potential)

I don't know much about video game design courses but is a high-end laptop simply not going to cut it? If it's just that you can't live without it for personal use it might be worthwhile to try. If I was studying abroad I wouldn't care about my computer beyond whats needed for classes because I'd rather be out doing and seeing things.
