Which notebook is better? - Page 2

Is it worth going after these kinds of after-market RAM (I can always look up Kingston or some other manufacturer if you guys think those are better, haven't had a problem with Crucial yet tho), or should I stick with the more expensive RAM that comes with the computer?
Also, jrbroad77, have you had a chance to look over those specs yet? Any idea what all that's about?
Thanks a TON for your help!

I'd go with the Intel wi-fi. Both have similar specs (same, far as I can tell), but the Intel has a few more features.. Wifi Direct sounds interesting.

No big deal either way on the RAM. And yes, I knew it was an Alienware ;p .

As for going Y580 or Y480 - both have backlit keyboard and USB 3.0. Only big negative of the Y480 is 1366x768 resolution (its a matter of personal preference I suppose). I'd also expect the Alienware to have better cooling, as it weighs 1 pound more. Can't say for sure since it's only been out a few weeks and there's not much testing done with it yet. The Y580 temps are pretty good even running Furmark - lower than Asus G55 from what I've seen. HDD gets "hot" according to some.. not sure its a big deal really. I'd say either would be worth the $500 saving. If you give up some flashiness, Sager NP9130 would save you ~$3-400 and it's customizable - http://xoticpc.com and http://malibal.com sell it (on Malibal it's called something else; I forget - whichever 15" model is in the ~$900-1100 base price range). If you don't mind spending the extra on Alienware, no big deal. You might be able to get a discount by calling their customer support (or is it sales?) line, if you look around the first couple pages of this forum there's someone who got a few hundred slashed off the M17x price.

I agree with everyone else. Y580 all the way, I bought one a couple months back and it is the most amazing piece of computing hardware I have ever seen. I got mine for $950 ($1000 - $50 discount they give me for workin at IBM) and put an adata 64GB sx300 micro ssd in there. I use this thing more than my desktop now thumb.gif

btw in case you were wondering:
battery life 6-7 hours
produces no heat unless under heavy 3d loads
windows score:
CPU-7.6
MEM-7.7 (7.8 with adata 9-9-9 low voltage ram)
Graphics- 7.2
Hard drive -7.9 (with ssd)

Usually Lenovo re-releases their laptops a few months after the original with a "p" version using AMD graphics. They did this with the Y460/Y460p as well as the Y470/Y470p. Looking at Lenovo's Chinese website (which is always ahead, since Lenovo is based in China) there appears to be a "Y485" for sale in Asia with an AMD processor as well as a Radeon HD 7690+ (whatever that means). However if that's the same as the 7690M just using a different terminology on the Chinese version, then I've heard the GT 650M is a more powerful card. The screen resolution is a bit disappointing for sure, but you can always hook it to an external monitor when you're at home, and you probably won't be gaming on battery in a coffee shop anyway.

Since storage isn't an issue, an SSD is the way to go tongue.gif From what I've heard it's an easy swap on these laptops.

Rindoze: Sorry. Heck, I even GAVE you the first one (Alienware). The second is a LOT more obscure, and was only on my radar cuz it's the parent of my current company.

Glenwing: We've gotta compare notes on the difference between nV and AMD on laptops...

I'll look over some of the other things when I get the chance. I'll probably have tons more questions when I actually get the chance to look these over.

Quick, random question about all of this...

If I find that the wireless card isn't good enough and I need an upgrade, how difficult is it to replace the card? Where can I find places to purchase a different, more powerful card?
Why wouldn't the wireless card be powerful enough?

My older Intel Centrino-N DW1520 card from three years ago is more than powerful enough for day to day stuffs.

But I'm not worried about day-to-day stuff.

I'm worried about streaming my videos out to the internet. Hopefully two or three at a time. I don't know what kind of wifi power I'd need in order to get that streaming done correctly, without hiccup.
Any wi-fi card made in the last couple years shouldn't have any trouble streaming 2-3 movies to the internet at a time.
