OS for an elderly person

Thread Starter
I need some suggestions for my friend's dad. He's in his 70's and is pretty much technology illiterate, but is VERY picky about what he wants. He currently uses a 17 inch laptop with Windows 7 for web surfing, Youtube, email, etc. There are widgets on his desktop for stocks, currency conversion, and the time for several different cities. The problem is that his wife and daughter are getting pretty annoyed with him asking for help with everything, from forgetting his password to his email or not knowing how to print. He's also stubborn as **** and won't go take computer classes or read books on how to do stuff. Now they're asking me for advice and I honestly don't know what to say.

So basically I need suggestions to making Windows 7 (or whatever OS) more suitable and intuitive for someone who:
  • doesn't know the difference between left click and right click
  • doesn't know what browser tabs are; keeps closing browser unnecessarily
  • accidentally closes widgets and doesn't know how to bring them back
  • tapes his id/pw on his laptop
  • calls his ISP for tech support and gets suckered into buying some subscription plan costing hundreds

I suggested an iPad, but that's a fairly large investment, and I don't know how he'd cope with going from a 17" inch screen to something so small.

doh.gif Help?

If he is literally just surfing the web check out some Chrome Books with Chrome OS. He'll have access to all of Google cloud based services and you can install Last Pass Chrome extention to remember all his passwords for him.

There's some Linux based OS's designed specifically for this type of user. Sadly I can't remember any of them at the moment. But I'll update this thread when I do:)

I talked with an elder couple that bought as whole system (this comes as a system) called "my gait", It is designed specifically for seniors and the couple told me they loved it!

http://www.mygait.com/

There way another one based on linux engineered for seniors but, forgot the name of that company.

EDIT:Not knowing the difference between right and left click pretty much automatically qualifies one for needing the full on "old people OS".

I was never going to suggest Ubuntu / Mint as I think they'd be just as innapropiate as Win7 currently is. Where as the above solution is designed with exactly the user in question in mind. Thus it makes no bloody difference what the underlying OS is because the user will never be presented with it.

so yeah, if you can find the same kind of interface in Windows, then by all means go for it. I don't care what the underlying OS is, as an interface like that is what really matters.

You could try introducing him to Windows 8. Sure most of us enthusiasts don't care for Windows 8 but once it's set up everything is more or less memorized and synchronized together into one platform. I had my grandparents try it a while ago and they actually liked it since a. they didn't need help operating it after setup and b. everything was in one place. Just my 2cents.gif You could always throw it in a VM to let him try it out. He shouldn't lose any data if he does choose to use Windows 8 if you run the Upgrade method.

Coincidently I was watching a technology show this morning that mentioned a few solutions for the elderly. I'll try and dig out the programme later if I get time as there were a few suggestions made that hadn't already been posted here. smile.gif

Seconded. I think Windows 8 with Metro would be a good plan.
