Which would be best for landscapes? Auto-focus is nice but not essential, I just want the sharpest lens with the best contrast

depends on the situation.... 50mm usually isn't really used for landscapes. I would consider getting a wide angle lens to do landscapes. But if you want a 50mm, have you considered the 50mm 1.8G. It's sharper wide open than the 1.4g. 50mm 1.4 ais is ok, but it doesn't have a modern lens coating that could result in a lil bit more flare in some situations.

I personally loved the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for landscapes.

Yeah, I would love a wide angle.. I actually used to have the Tokina 11-16 2.8mm, and a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 ex dc os hsm fld, as well as a Canon 17-40L.. (not all at the same time tongue.gif) Unfortunately I can't afford a wide lens that is as high quality as my last, so I am choosing to find a sharp standard which cost much less than an equivalently sharp and high quality wide. I will just have to walk a but farther back than usual tongue.gif ... If I had the money I would by the Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX, I have heard that that is an excellent lens.

Hmm is the 1.8G really sharper than the 1.4G wide open? if so I wouldn't mind saving the extra money. I don't need a wide aperture so much, I have off camera flashes for low light

I haven't played with a 50mm f1.8G personally but from what I hear its sharper than the 1.4g. It's suppose to have an ashp element that the 1.4g doesn't have. It's also a FX lens if that matters at all to you.

Nowadays I use a Zeiss 50mm f1.4..... perhaps look into that if you like manual lenses.

not all landscapes need to be shot with a wide angle lens. honestly i have seen some pretty incredible landscape shots taken at the 50mm focal length and even longer wink.gif

Then don't look for fast lenses. Typically, lots of compromises have to be made to create a usable result wide open. If you're shooting at narrow apertures, buy a cheap 1.8D -- even wide open, it's decent.

50mm macro is another option then. But I guess when you're stopping down then most lenses are pretty close.

After reading your posts, and reading more reviews of the lenses I think I will go with a Nikon 50mm f1.8G lens. The price is rite and the lens seems to be of good quality. Thanks for the help everyone smile.gif

For what body? The AF-D is quite a bit cheaper if you have a body that will drive it.
