Hey everyone. I am debating between the gtx 670 and the 7970 both priced around 400.

the 670...

I dont know the difference between these two...

I am upgrading from a evga gtx 470 and would like get a faster card. I may at some point upgrade to sli or crossfire or perhaps just sell the new gpu for a faster single card down the line.

Power is not a problem I have a 950W power supply.
I have a i7 920 oced to 4GHz will this bottleneck?
I have a h212 coolerfor the cpu in my haf 922 case. I have soooooooo many fans case temp also is not an issue.
I am using 12gb of 1600 ram.
I have a 1tb 7200rpm hdd.
My mobo only supports pcie 2.0 so that and my cpu will be my next upgrade at some point.

Basically I hear that nvidia is better gaming and amd is better benching. I will be gaming among other things but game performance is my biggest concern. Also taking into consideration heat, power consumption, noise, ect I think that the gtx 670 is the better card. However I hear that the 7970 will oc better? I will not increase voltage or use a aftermarket cooler other than the ones purchased.

I am torn and can't decide... I don't even know if I should wait for the next gen gpu's to come out. If I could get some feedback on my ideas that would be great. Also if there are any other upgrades that you may suggest I am eternally greatful. I was thinking of getting a ssd since prices are down.

Thanks again everyone.

Hey Crimson and welcome to the forums.

Both GPUs are great and you will not regret any of them. I am personally a Nvidia fan and I prefered Nvidia for adaptive vsync, fxaa, txaa and physx.

P.S. try to get an SSD for your system as well.

Also take a look at this GPU as well

Prety great price

Hey thanks for the comments. I am also a nvidia fan. How much difference is there between the galaxy and the gigabyte in terms of overclocking? The gigabyte has a 6 and 8 pin power connector as opposed to the 6 and 6 on the galaxy. Also it has better cooling, do you think that justifies the price difference?

Ocing is kind of a lottery with Kepler GPUs but I used to own the Gigabyte 670 before and I used to LOVE THAT GPU. So much. It was quiet and fast. It was an already OCed GPU and I could OC it further to 1200 mhz.

I now own a Zotac 670 4gb and it is a reference speed GPU and I can also OC it to 1200mhz as well

Normally my Gigabyte had to OC further but unfortunately it didnt. I was unlucky. There are many users whom are using it at 1250 or 1300 mhz.

But all of these GPUs had a 680 PCB which technically makes Ocing capabalities higher.

Now that Galaxy 670 is a very good GPU as well. I never used it but I heard good things about it.

The Galaxy 670 is Factory OCed a bit higher than Gigabyte 670.

For $50 lower it is a good buy if you ask me. But again if you purchase Gigabyte 670 you will love it as well.

Purchase it from newegg.com though if you want

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125423

No need to deal with rebate and it is $399

Keep the GTX 470 because the GeForce 700 series is coming out in just a couple of months.

Yeah I would not wait for 7xx series as well.

I mean I have a 670 now and was thinking about going SLI but for that purpose I am waiting for 7xx series but if i had an older GPU that wasnt making me too happy anymore than I would go for a Kepler GPU. 6-7 months is a long time. smile.gif

I agree with iARDS

Also if you like or may like 3d gaming Nvidias 3d Vision is the best.

On the other side 7970 is a better performer. The 7970 will outperform the 670 and both OCd the 7970 will have even a farther advantage.

So 7970 is a much better performance wise, but Nvidia has better driver support (except AMD 12.7 drivers) and all the other Nvidia extras. Choice is yours. Benefits on both sides thumb.gif

Usually the cards with an 8pin and 6pin have better overclocking capablities because of the extra power going into the card. As far as i know it provides better stability when adjusting the voltage of the GPU.
