I have tried unsuccessfully to create a USB for DOS boot, which seems to be the only damn way to get a new BIOS onto this board:
Albatron K8NF4X, AM2SLI
Here's the manufacturer's instructions. No help for me dealing with an OS that hates DOS.
Why am I updating BIOS?
Trying to fix/clean/stabilise this old computer for someone. Reinstalling Windows with a fresh drive format isn't an option here, as much as I'd love to do that.
I have updated everything I can think of, done chkdsk /r, done mfc /scannow, done a LOT of other security/maintenance stuff, tweaked some things for stability, and am now onto drivers/BIOS because things still aren't quite right. For example, CPU-Z freezes the entire system as it starts up, on the 'SPD' loading screen. No way out of that but to reboot. Hardware Monitor causes the same freeze.
At first I thought RAM but it passes memtest fine. I'm onto BIOS and drivers. The latest BIOS notes this: "※This bios need cooperate with WinXP Package driver V6.70 and WinXP64 Package driver V6.69.
....so I download that driver package and run setup - and it BSODs on me half way through
a lot of crashes seem to be to do with either the RAM or the ethernet controller and its nVidia driver - I'm hoping it somehow cleans up with a new BIOS in there and I can install the rest of the drivers without a hitch.
Please help me dig my way out of this old hack of a system lmao
It's better than it was but if I can fix it that'd be ideal.
