This is the 7th card that I am going to have to RMA now in the space of just over a year! - Page 13

we have no way of testing the power quality over a forum, but do know that a power supply by itself does little to clean the power if the mains are terrible.

5 of your 7 cards exhibited "stability" issues as you describe (though it is very hard to quantify "sluggish cursor movement").

And as stated above, drivers also play a role in how it performs (obviously). Have you even checked any of the settings in Catalyst Control Center?

by the way, Nvidia isn't all that great either. I deal with building software images for computers here at work (HP DC7800 SFF). The Asus OEM 8400 GS Dual Heads fail to function over a DMS-59 to dual VGA adapter if you install any nvidia driver past 280.26. This has been tested time and time again, and even Windows 8 ships with a faulty driver.

I think I'd have to agree with what people are saying about how something else is causing this problem. I really couldn't tell you because I have no idea where to start. I know people have bad luck and might get a bad card or two...but the odds of you having that many bad cards in a row is highly improbable.

  • My radeon 6850 broke randomly after playing bad company 2, fair enough cards do go bad. I verified this on my friends computer (and so did the retailer) so that's not my fault.
6950:
  • Both VTX3D cards seemed to run fine except the image quality was significantly worse than on my previous cards. I verified this by running it on my friends computer.
  • The twin forzr iii card ran fine but the cursor movement seemed way,way slower than on my other card. Image quality was comparable to my 6850.
Before I got my first 7850, I switched motherboards to the new AM3+ board and temporarily used the 6950 until the sapphire one arrived.
7850
  • The sapphire card I had had a broken cooler (made a rattling noise) Fair enough, stuff like this happens and I had to RMA it.
  • My first asus 7850 would crash randomly after an indefinite period of time. Games ran fine apart from this issue.
  • Second asus 7850 would do weird flickering in games. I replaced my power supply after I first noticed this and it still occurs.
Please explain to me ez12a, where do you think any of these problems are my fault? I really am curious to find out what you think rolleyes.gif

There are only 2 possible ways for these to happen:

1. You are the unluckiest person in the world. (there are other symptoms such as falling bird poop on your face while walking down a street)

2. You know nothing about computers other than reading the label (which is why you can identify the videocard names)

Im going with number 2, in which case your best option is to forget about computers and go with a PS3 or xbox. You wont get any problems there, I assure you 100%

Computers are more sensitive to improper power regulation than just about any other consumer electronic. Either his electrical upgrade 20 years ago wasn't done properly, or an issue has developed somewhere in the system.

OP take a look at a 1982 computer and compare to current systems, that's how ancient your domestic power system is..

consult a GOOD electrician. They will need to do a study which pretty much means they have to leave a power quality tester like a Fluke over a span of several days, even weeks to detect problems.

also check your grounds.

It's not unheard of to have terrible contractors do sketchy work, even 20 years ago.

it's not uncommon to have stuff like this:
http://youtu.be/XKZUFu97vus

just a simple google shows all this stuff.

IF you have access to a multimeter - connect to mains on AC and get the folks to switch on/off the cooker/dishwasher/washing machine and observe the reading...

Don't attempt if you aren't confident you won't electrocute yourself...

I use to have one and had so many problems with ATI cards. I have since switched to Nvidia and never looked back. It has been over ten years since I have owned one of their cards.

boy there are some serious AMD fanboys on this thread. Lets be honest here, if my power was unstable, I would be suffering from more than a few issues than the video card rolleyes.gif. Fair enough if the system just shuts off randomly and this happens with one than more power supply, then I would believe that there was something seriously wrong with the power in my house but I live in a modern country with a modern power supply infrastructure not some country in the middle of Africa.

I don't know as much as some people here on OCN.net, but I defiantly do know more than the average Joe when it comes to computing. If the nividia card comes back as faulty, I will fully admit on that this thread that It did.
