The first 6850 i had was a club3d, the two 6950's were VTX3D (powercolour rebrands), one MSI 6950, one sapphire 7850 and two asus 7850's.

6850
  • My radeon 6850 broke randomly after playing bad company 2, fair enough cards do go bad. I verified this on my friends computer (and so did the retailer) so that's not my fault.
6950:
  • Both VTX3D cards seemed to run fine except the image quality was significantly worse than on my previous cards. I verified this by running it on my friends computer.
  • The twin forzr iii card ran fine but the cursor movement seemed way,way slower than on my other card. Image quality was comparable to my 6850.
Before I got my first 7850, I switched motherboards to the new AM3+ board and temporarily used the 6950 until the sapphire one arrived.
7850
  • The sapphire card I had had a broken cooler (made a rattling noise) Fair enough, stuff like this happens and I had to RMA it.
  • My first asus 7850 would crash randomly after an indefinite period of time. Games ran fine apart from this issue.
  • Second asus 7850 would do weird flickering in games. I replaced my power supply after I first noticed this and it still occurs.
Please explain to me ez12a, where do you think any of these problems are my fault? I really am curious to find out what you think rolleyes.gif

club3d 6850 #1 = bad name brand possibly (I've not heard of them.)

VTX3D 6950 #2, #3 = bad name brand possibly (I've not heard of them...and I don't think too highly of powercolor either so.)

twin forzr iii 6950 #4 = this would have been a good time to reinstall windows and start fresh.

sapphire 7850 #5 = sapphire is a great brand....but this one seems cut and dry. RMA was called for here definitely. It wasn't related to any of the other issues. Just a bad fan.

asus 7850 #6 = sounds like a RAM, PSU, power, software/driver/windows, or obviously a GPU issue

asus 7850 #6 = sounds like a RAM, PSU, power, software/driver/windows, or obviously a GPU issue....you didn't take a picture of the serial number before you sent it in did you?

Sorry for immediately dismissing the VTX3D/CLUB3D brands..but I don't consider them reliable as I am unfamiliar with them.
As we have it you have replaced the MOBO and PSU but still have potential issues with the RAM (mismatch or bad ram) and possibly your main power.

You said you tested the original CLUB3D 6850 on a friend's computer.
At his hours or yours?
Is his house wiring better or worse than yours?

Fair enough if the system just shuts off randomly and this happens with one than more power supply, then I would believe that there was something seriously wrong with the power in my house but I live in a modern country with a modern power supply infrastructure not some country in the middle of Africa.
I don't know as much as some people here on OCN.net, but I defiantly do know more than the average Joe when it comes to computing. If the nividia card comes back as faulty, I will fully admit on that this thread that It did.

Bad power/PSU's can cause BSOD and can kill MOBOs and HDDs...don't see why a GPU would be immune to this.
You should get your electricals checked out.

woah, thanks for the good response man! :-) I have no problem with you dismissing the club3d/vtx3d brands, only reason I bought them was because it was the only one in stock at the time/it was a tad bit cheaper. Yeah, I tested the 6850 over at my friends house. His house was built in the early 2000's so its modern by my houses standards and he reports no problems with his computer/electrics.

I don't know if its helpful to you but I did have a pentium 4 desktop about 5 years ago with a modest graphics card. Only problem I had with it was the hard drive dying but this was due to the head making the click of death.

The replacement 7850 I got was defiantly brand new, it was a older revision (I know this because the power connector was built in to the side of the card, this one I got has sort of a extension cable in it and came in a different box). The first asus 7850 had a hair in the outer packaging of it redface.gif but again the factory seal was not broken so I thought nothing of it, and I have never touched the golden contacts before on the pcb. I inspected all of the golden chips just to make sure there was no user damage at play, but all looked squeaky clean smile.gif

Again, this probably won't be much use to you but I have a set of homeplugs (which can be heavily influenced by bad wiring) and I get the full speed of my internet connection from them. I had one problem with them where I bought a crappy replacement laptop charger off ebay was causing my speeds to half, but that's just the nature of the technology.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my ram is mixed, but I tried taking out one set of the ram, and then the other set, just to make sure that they were conflicting.

I know it's frustrating, but I have to agree with many others here, the chances of you getting this many bad cards in a row is probably something like one in a million or more. If it truly is the case, then I disagree with the other poster, and think you definitely SHOULD play the lottery.

Just a quick update guys, I ran haven benchmark and the flashing seems to happen (when every setting is put to the highest) randomly, under no certain scene in the run around. You know that effect when a game gets over 60 fps but the monitor is running at 60hz? that also seems to be happening even when the fps is at 23 ? biggrin.gifrolleyes.gif

Should I also mention that I get sporadic fade in/out animations when I lock my desktop. Sort of a checkerbox style sometimes. Happened with my old asus 7850 as well. I will upload a video of it as it is something I can easily replicate

by the way, I was extremely tired when i was recording this video, so yeah tongue.gif

Edit: the camera did not really pick up the problem that well, but you can still see what I am talking about.

I think you said earlier that you tried it with only the slow ram and still had the problem.
For a sanity check I would have also tried it only with the fast ram.

I was curious of the make/manufacturer of the ram though.
If it is a quality brand like Muskin/Corsair/Crucial/Kingston/Samsung/etc or something offbrand like SuperTalent....heh.

Homeplug? I've not heard them called that before...interesting.

I'm glad at least your friend's house has good wiring that you can test with.

.....No idea what I'm supposed to be seeing in that video of yours.
Pretty sure I did not see it though.

sounds like you have some serious static problems when you're installing the cards and shocking the crap outa them. Are you leaving the case open as well?

I'm sure you fried your friends PC too swapping parts, just give it a few month before he has some issues.....

What I would have done a little earlier on is start building a relationship with a retailer in your area. Cards could be tested installed in your system at his shop and if things are not right immediate replacement with another card made. You are doing all the card picking, wiping, installing ,configuring, then deciding things are not OK all on your own,and it is stretching things out too far.You need to get another set of eyes on this problem to help you make calls, that would be calls supported by the tech service at the retailer you built the relationship with.Sometimes there are good reasons to go with a "brick and mortar" retailer instead of a newegg style supplier, and this appears to be one of those times.

The every time the retailers accept a return, beforehand the engineers working for the website will test the card out on a system they have. One of the times, the manufacturer had to have a look as the returns window closed on the card, they also found it to be faulty, so its hardly like I am imagining it? In the case of one or two of the cards (the vtx3d ones) my friend also tried it out on his system and he noticed it as well.

I don't know how I am breaking the cards by static discharge. Its not like I purposely rub my feet in the carpet I have in my hallway and then rub my hands all over the PCB of the card, is it? tongue.gif My case is closed when my computer is in operation.

By homeplug, I am referring to the Ethernet over powerline adapters. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePlug) They actually work pretty well :-)

On that video, it might not very clear but you can sort of see that at 2:12 it kind of fades in a weird pattern. it looks way worse IRL anyway.
