This is the 7th card that I am going to have to RMA now in the space of just over a year! - Page 16

It is more the second set of eyes on the problem that will be the most benefit. My local retailer is very competitive with newegg pricing and if something goes bad and he has a new one in stock,I get it right now (for the first year) and he handles all RMA issues.I would think by the 7th time I asked my retailer to RMA a gpu for me he would ask me to "bring that thing in and let me take a look at it."

y.

All it takes is moving a couple feet on carpet to generate enough static to zap a part on the video card, mother board ect. The sweat on your body generates static. Some parts are classified more sensitive then other, some are as sensitive as 200 volts before they are damaged such as microchips. The only TRUE RMAs are the dead on arrive stuff, running parts then having them die a week or months later is the result of handling and having THAT many cards die is a huge red flag that something is REALLY wrong in your area, not to mention lack of humidity can also magnify ESD on a daily basis.

Where ever you are assembling your PC at, you need a way to get charge off of you. I'd recommend you save yourself some money and time and read up on the subject http://www.radio-electronics.com/info/electronics-design/esd/what-is-basics-electrostatic-discharge-tutorial.php

Yeah, you make a valid point there mate. Where I live in, there are literally no PC shops (and if there are, they sell generic crappy off brand products for 5x the price)

Anyway, I will let you guys know how things get on. Hopefully the next card will go better for me, but I doubt it. I kind of have incredibly bad luck not only in the PC component world but also in real life as well. Gaming not only serves as entertainment for me, but also as a form of escapism.

Oh well, once I have food on my table each night, I guess things are not going so bad smile.gif

well ye could have stated that it was the PCIE clock rate biggrin.gif Apart from a few settings that would not make much of a diffrence to system operation, everything is at deafult. I don't have the card with me anymore anyway and I am stuck using my crappy netbook redface.gif When your computer lags running youtube 360p videos, you know its bad (and the funny thing is that this is using one of the newer atoms with HDMI support and all the junkware was removed! )

Thanks for all the help anyway guys.

Dude no.
This is not true.

Have you not heard of the Burn-in period?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burn-in

I'm not sure where some of you are getting all these crazy ideas about static discharge.
I think I ruined maybe 1 piece of equipment ever due to static discharge....it was winter time and we had carpeted floors and the computer had it's feet removed so it was just a steel case on the floor.
I had been working that job for 5 months by then fixing about 3-5 PCs a day.
Its rare.
Very rare.
Just touch some grounded metal (PC case or PSU if you prefer...it doesn't matter) before working on the PC every single time before you thrust your hand into the guts of it and you'll be okay.

+1

I really don't think it was a problem with static discharge. Out of interest, how exactly are cards tested in the factory before they are shipped out? Do they just check if the circuit is completed?

Actually ESD is very common killer of computers components you think of how many people on OCN say I fitted new ram and since then my PC is unstable or I replaced the CPU and nothing works and no one really knows why and we RMA and we get a new one and everything is ok, the fact is it was probably damaged by esd, especially the cases in this thread where things are working but just not correctly that is classic signs of ESD damage.

Remember you shuffle your feet on a rug and you can generate up to 12000 volts (at very very low wattage that can't harm us) and yet it only takes 400 volts to destroy a component, one of the most fragile components is in a rig is RAM and you seem to have RAM issues on these graphics cards. The guys saying that just touch the case before going in, well alot of cases are painted these days and touching your painted case will not discharge you.

Personally I don't touch the inside of my PC with out a wrist strap on and connected..

Maybe they do a simple test on all of them....and every 100 or so they do a full burn test on.
Just guessing.
