Need help with SSD and HDD

Thread Starter
So I bought an SSD and installed Windows and everything on it, moved all the libraries and stuff over to the HDD, but when I install games on the HDD it still uses up space on the SSD. Why is that happening?

Well depends on what games.

A lot of information is stored in your Documents such as saved files. You might be able to find these directories by searching for them in registry.

If you are talking about install files, most is probably hidden in ProgramData in the C: drive or one the AppData under All Users, or Default user.

You also have the pagefile which is roughly equal to the size of the RAM, and the hibernate file Windows 7 makes also equal to the size of your ram.

I don't recommend completely disabling the pagefile, but if you don't use full hibernate disable that in CMD prompt

powercfg -h off

Both files are located under C:\ root, but just enter the command and whatever size RAM you have should also free up. If you are running updates in Windows 7, make sure to run Disc Cleanup, and if you install Office updates, delete the MSOCache folder hidden on your C:\ drive after everythings installed.

Useless GB waiting to be freed up on a SSD.

Alright, so I can't change where the game installs? Because when I install it, I set the path to the "Installations" folder on my HDD, yet it takes up the SSD's space, the game is GTA IV, but the same thing happens on other games too, and programs. :S

You sure can If your using Steam or Origin you can go into settings and change were games will be downloaded to.
Or when your installing a game you will be able to pick the drive you want it on.

How much space? The same amount as the game, or some smaller amount? Does the game actually install to the HDD - as in, is the game folder on the HDD and populated with all the files, or is it on the SSD? You really haven't provided a detailed enough description of the problem. Are you sure you don't have the HDD mapped to the SSD somehow - maybe a junction or something where the game thinks it is going to the HDD but it is actually going to the SSD?

Yeah, it's taking the exact space as the game, and I can't find where the game is actually installing to... It isn't in the HDD folder, so it's probably somewhere on the SSD. I'm not very good with computers so I can't give you a more detailed description, sorry. That's all I know. =/

If you open Windows explorer to the drive (either SSD or HDD) you might be able to use the search feature to find the location of the game itself (often the name of the executable file is the same as the game name - for GTA IV you can search for GTAIV.exe and that'll at least show you where it is installing. Are these Steam games? Most games will install to the Program Files (x86) folder under the developer name, and Steam games install to the Steam folder there. Are you sure you are actually changing the install location when you install the game (for non-Steam games - Steam won't give you the option on a per-game basis)?
