MX Black or MX Brown for gaming?

Thread Starter
I'm a pretty decent FPS player and I've been reading about mechanical keyboards for what it seems like a year now.. interested in making the leap.
I love my numpad, so tenkeyless is not an option, cable length has no significance since my comp is right next to my desk, and backlit keys are not necessary since I find it unbearable to game in the dark.

Currently using the Microsoft Sidewinder X4, the feel is decent, but I don't know what decent is since I have never put my hands on a mechanical keyboard. After 1 year the WASD key paint on my Sidewinder X4 started to peel off excessively, so I'm looking for good durability (probably isn't an issue anymore). As said earlier, I never set my hands on a mech keyboard so I don't know what I'm looking for... any stores generally carry demo models of mechanical keyboards? I haven't seen any yet..

Picking between MX Blacks or MX browns. Leaning towards MX Blacks due to the much cheaper price and more of the "gamer" advertising, but I have read that a lot of people moved from Blacks to Browns and never thought about going back. I guess I can pick my own preferences, but OCN input would be nice...
My budget isn't really specified, but I would be going for the best price/performance/durability ratio. I've been looking at the CM Quickfire Pro keyboard, at the moment there is no MX Black version but according to CM live chat they will have them in stock within the next 2-3 weeks...

thanks! smile.gif

Steelseries 6Gv2.... blacks are preferred for FPS gaming. Brown is a hybrid between "typing and gaming (FPS)"
Costs about $99.99 now but was a lot cheaper when I bought mines.

Definitely go for the blacks, I can't game on browns at all. Sometimes when I reach the bump on the browns, I won't press it at all cuz I thought actuated the thing but I didn't, I use MX Reds and don't bottom out, its a pain in the neck whenever I play FPS on browns.

I'm not a heavy gamer but I do put in time, lol. With that being said I would recommend the browns. I tried the black switches and they feel smooth but I can see how most users say over extended periods of time that their fingers can become fatigued. The browns have a tiny tactile bump sensation and its only noticeable when I first got the keyboard. You should definitely go to a local store and try giving the keys a try before buying. I would recommend the red switches over the blacks though.

I think browns would be fine as well. I have the Cooler Master Cm Storm Trigger with brown switches and it has been great for gaming and all-around performance. however, i have had no experience with blacks, but i think you will do fine with browns.

Blacks are like typing in mashed potatoes. Going from an X4 to a 6Gv2 was a horrid experience. The white lettering on the keys smears almost immediately, and the big enter button is a pain to deal with. I couldn't get used to it so I returned it.

Its odd that you say you don't bottom out on reds, but have trouble with browns, since reds are linear. The only way you can be sure you've actuated them is to bottom them out.

I was under the impression that red where better for gaming, This is my 1st mech keyboard other then using old apple 2Es and IBMs back in my school days. like most people said its all about your preferences.

My input : Reds are super light so for button mashing games I could see it working great. I am playing Blands 2 right now, Some times when I'm sniping, my fingers tend to weigh down my WASD keys resulting in unwanted movement. This is something I'm to have to get used to. It's also far easier to fat finger keys if you are not used to it.

Sorry I don't have much input in regards to blacks or browns, maybe knowing more about reds can help? Idk, really just wanted to use more new keyboard to type some things biggrin.gif

I've owned blues, reds, browns, and blacks, and the reds and browns are by far my favorite. If you want a linear switch, try reds. I find the blacks to be a little too stiff for my liking. Otherwise, the browns are a great all around switch.

Agreed on your take with the black switches. Red and browns all the way! In all honesty OP should do himself a favor and try it out in person so that he can make a better decision afterwards.
