Video editing rig for under 600?

Thread Starter
I'm making a friend a Hackintosh for mainly video editing, music editing and creation. He has a budget of 600 and less, here is what I have so far. I'm open to suggestions to make this build cheaper or better.

Graphics Card

Is this rig fine? This will be the first time I've ever made a Hackintosh so I don't know that many specifics.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you needed an intel core cpu for a hackintsh. Can an AMD cpu be used as well?

AMD is a no go for it.. Even though I have built more than a couple myself there is a problem.. Discussing it is against the T.O.S. of OCN..

what editing platform are you using?

is that the only HDD you are putting in the rig or do you have others?

is this for professional editing?

i highly suggested having at least 2 HDD or 1 very large one with partitions. its best to keep your files separate from each other. a pro video editing rig with have a separate hard drive for software, scratch disk, and storage of project files. and some people will even have separate drives for preview files and scratch data.

i would say if no overclocking and max performance in 600$ then here is what i would say
PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($279.99 @ Amazon)

Motherboard: ASRock H61M-DGS Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($44.99 @ Amazon)

Memory: Pareema 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($31.89 @ Newegg)

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($52.99 @ NCIX US)

Video Card: PowerColor Radeon HD 7750 1GB Video Card ($89.99 @ Newegg)

Case: Cooler Master Elite 430 ATX Mid Tower Case ($29.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: Rosewill Green 530W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Total (before mail-in rebates): $599.83
Mail-in Rebates: $-20.00
Total: $579.83
just one thing you need to update the motherboard BIOS for ivy redface.gif

pro :
  • a i7 3770 can run any of you editing stuff
  • 8 Gigs RAM is enough for editing though i have heard 12 or 16GB is the best but on a avg a 8Gig is wat i would say
  • 7750 is way better then 6670 both in performance and energy efficiency
  • a CM 430 Elite might not look very pleasing to your eyes but has a decent VFM and has good air flow
  • PSU a 530 watts is more then enough for that system to run smoothly

cons :

  • you gotta upgrade your motherboards BIOS
  • HDD is 500GB
  • 0% overclocking frown.gif

Hope you like it thumb.gif

You are going to want something much better than a PII x4 for editing, and i7 is what you are going to want to aim for.

Good list, but you will want a CUDA supported video card. Cuts transcoding and rendering times in fractions
Also, AMD really sucks for Hackintosh, stick with the Intel.
