Looking for easy to carry netbook/laptop

Hello OCN,



I have never been too good at choosing laptops. I am currently looking for a laptop for my wife. All she will do on it is work, typing and PDF forms stuff like that. The MOST she will be doing on it is youtube.

I have been trying to find one but I don't know which laptop is a good base. I was thinking of getting her a laptop and putting like 120gb SSD on it to make it boot up faster. She works a lot with clients 1 on 1 so I don't want her to have those awkward silence moments because the laptop is being sluggish.

Take a look at the HP-Dm1 with the amd e-450 APU.

There are versions of this laptop that comes with support for 4G chips.
The processor is powerful enough for anything besides heavy gaming, and because of the GPU, things that can take advantage of hardware acceleration run great. She can easily plug a full HD tv to the HDMI port and output smooth 1080p video.

The laptop is told to run 11.5 or 10.5 hours on battery if it has an SSD. This can get anybody throughout the day on a single charge.

It weights around 1.57kgs


In the future you can just use this machine as an HTPC at home when she get's a better one, for example, or the battery is dead.

Budget? E-450 is good but it'll struggle on occasion. I'd go with at least a ULV i3; doesn't have to be the newest or anything. i3's are great because with even the 800mhz idle clock it has tons of horsepower to snap into work. E-450 at idle clocks is sketch, it will lag on occasion. You could force it to run at 100% but then you have a small noisy laptop with poor battery life on your hands. SSD will not make up for a slow CPU, but I'd still recommend SSD + i3.

E-450 will do HW accelerated 1080p yes. But the CPU is only as fast as a Pentium D; really it's nothing special. i3 at 1.3ghz is close to a 2ghz C2D, and blows away an Atom or E-series dual-core.
