Am I overclocking right?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

I am using a stock cooler for my 1090t. Yes, I know I shouldn't, but the temps don't seem too bad.

I overclocked the CPU to 3.6GHz for a while, and searched around online and found out that the temperature of other people's overclocking is around 50C at full load and mine, according to Core Temp is around 45C on full load on Prime95. So I decided to up the core multiplier in the BIOS to x19, to 3.8GHz - now I get max 51C.

I'm just wondering about this overclocking stuff because it just seems too easy (just up the multiplier, leaving everything else on auto), and my temperatures are pretty average for the clock speed, but they're pretty low for a stock fan?

Am I missing something important? How far can I go?

Really confused.

Jack

What is CPU NB? What does it mean and what should I overclock it to if my normal CPU clock is 3.8GHz?

What is actually limiting me from going further? Is it just the temperatures, because they seem to be fine. What's the max load temperature recommendation?

CPU northbridge basically houses the memory controller.

Overclocking that to about to about 2600-2800MHz would give you a nice boost.

Two things need to be paid attention to here:

1. I'd overclock using both the ref clock and multi since that way your RAM and NB are upped, giving you better performance.

2. Before you proceed any further, ensure that the board's VRMs are cooled since that board features an unsinked 4+1 layout. Thubans are power-hungry and you'll throttle on load, losing peak performance.

Personally, I would not be OCing on that board. Unheatsinked 4+1 phase on a OCed 6 core is a bit too risky. IMO
