Shooting people with black lights in room, help.

Thread Starter
This Friday my friend and i are shooting a high school Morp (dance) with black lights decorating the gym.

I will have a room set up with a black back drop for couples/group portraits.

*What i need help with is photographing candid shots in the gym.

I will be using a 17-50 F/2.8 lens and i do have a speed light with a 3' tether.
My friend has the 24-70 F/2.8 with vr, speed light and wireless trigger.
We both have 70-200 F/2.8.
2 24" softboxes with hair light and two 4' reflectors.

*Is the black light going to be too dark where i will need a flash to keep from getting a blurry image?
*Will flash ruin the black light effect?

*I will be shooting raw, but still i like to set my wb. Should i be set to fluorescent or flash, or neither?

I was thinking of adding in a black light to the portraits for an effect. This would help set this dance apart from prom/other dances.
*Does this seem like a good idea, or will it be too hard to shoot?
*Should one work as a fill or hair light? Does the room need to be darker for this to work?

Candids, eh? You're gonna piss people off strobing in their faces, so rent some fast glass and pray for ISO. 24L II or 35L would be perfect, the 24 will probably be more usable indoors if you're using a crop camera.

have u done any test shots with the blacklight at home? cause i have a feeling the metering is going to give you all sorts of crazy exposure value.

I was hoping someone would speak up and say "BL photos are easy, just do this". But that is a good idea to go get a light and see what i can do.

Faster than F/2.8? (lenses listed above) I do also have a F/1.8 50mm.
Yes on cropped camera.
Yep, it would be a direct flash as the ceiling are too tall with perhaps an occasional wall bounce. (depends on color of wall). But it is better to get the shot than have no shots.

50 1.8 is going to be rather slower to focus than other lenses in low light situations like that.

you might be in over your head honestly i cant imagine shooting with Blacklights as your main source to be an easy feat at all. if there are any black people you will probably not be able to get an exposure unfortunately. a speed light will be a must considering this sounds like you are basically doing candid club photography except not at a real club.

you will probably want maybe a speedlight with one of those gary phong globes. dont rely on bouncing from a wall because then you limit yourself to having to work around that need and people will get frustrated with you if you make them turn or move to properly get a good bounce off a wall.

and yes a speedlight will more than likely kill the blacklight effects. only other option to keep it club looking is do speedlight with slow shutter speeds to get the light trails effect. never done it before but i dont imagine it being more difficult than relying on being near a wall at all times

also as mentioned with the globe or flash diffuser of some kind. your shots will be considerably more appealing with the limitations if you are not shooting a speed light straight at people from the top of the camera. diffused light is more flattering than flat direct light

Rather than the speed light doe, i have an 8X10 soft box attachment. It had not even come to mind as i have not had opportunity to really even use it yet. Thanks for the reminder.
I will just stick with the 17-50mm for the gym. As you mentioned focus speeds, that may help with getting the shot.

Thanks for the advice on slow shutter/speed light.

Remember that f/1.4 means you get the same exposure with two stops slower ISO (compared to f/2.8 of course). Without a flash, I would say your best option is the 50/1.8 unless you can rent equipment. My honest recommendation for this outing would be a 5D2 or 5D3 and a couple of f/1.4 lenses to complement -- the unique look of blacklights and colored lights will be lost in a sea of flash or destroyed by unreasonably high ISO settings with those f/2.8 lenses.

8x10 softbox might not be best option if you are doing run and gun candid photos lol

Soft box that straps on to the off camera speed light. This is a smaller private school, so there will really only be 25-30 kids.

Also, there are no local rental places in my small town and no real budget, so i won't be renting anything.

its up to you man. just saying that most people that shoot exactly what you have described as club candid photos. use a much faster lens and a globe diffuser on a speed light. not saying thats the only way to do it just saying thats the only way i have seen people shoot what you have described. im sure you will get fine results. since you have no budget just do what you can with what you have
