1:1 with DDR2-6400 and PD-930

Thread Starter
If i buy 2gb of ddr2-6400(Corsair Twin2X) can i run the memory multiplier at 1:1?? This is an option in the bios of my MSI 955X-Plat. Would this be the ideal setup?? I did have the system overcloked to 4Ghz(270Mhz fsb), but after a while it became unstable. I later found out that the jumper harness to my cpu fan was bad and allowed the cpu to heat up enough to shut the system down due to thermal limit more than once(over 110C). So i clocked it back to 200Mhz on the fsb. If my math is correct the 1:1 ratio will work, but i have been known to be wrong in the past, so im looking to you guys for a little guidance.

1:1 for DDR2 and that CPU with an FSB of 200MHz is equal to a DDR2 speed of DDR2 400. I get a feeling that DDR2 800 speed is the 1:1 speed, but that's actually 1:2 in favor of the RAM. Why people buy DDR2 800 RAM? So they can overclock a lot with the RAM on 1:1, up to an FSB of 400MHz before the RAM even hits stock.

Swayne: he's running it with a Pentium D 930 (See title)

ok i see what you're saying now. I am constantly getting it backwards. And no, i cant run a conroe on my mb. Believe me if i had been doing my homework i would have gotten a 965 mb instead of my 955. My mulitplier is set to 1.66:1 now so that i have a ddr2 speed of just under the advertised speed of 675. I did have the ram overclocked(by total accident) to 780 once and it actually worked pretty good(kudos to Corsair!!). I just cant get it out of my head that the multiplier is somehow a bottleneck to the ram tranfer/speed. Im probably totally wrong about this, i just need to hear that it isnt from someone and ill be ok.

There isn't a bottleneck

As I stated, the 1:1 divider is with RAM at DDR2 400 speeds. As you said, you're running at 1.66:1. Running RAM faster than the 1:1 will give you a slight speed increase, but at 1:1 there definately is not a bottleneck

You're doing just fine with that CPU/RAM combination

You see a lot of people with DDR2 800 right now, but that's because they have the Core 2 Duo, which (a) runs at an FSB of 266MHz (DDR2 533 is 1:1), and (2) the Core 2 Duo overclocks like mad (FSBs of 400+ are not unusual). Thus, for the core 2 duo, DDR2 800 is basically a necessity to run 1:1 (although there is some really good DDR2 667 that overclocks like mad.)

yeah i think that i have some. I just messed with the fsb and left the multiplier alone. I only started at 225 and i havent messed with it since. Its ok at 753Mhz(675 stock). I gave it some voltage and left the timings alone and it gave me a nice bandwidth increase in sandra lite 2007. I'm sure that i probably could get some more out of it, but im getting some funny temp readings from my cpu right now so im trying to figure that out right now. I think that i really screwed it up when overheated those couple of times, but that is for another thread!!
