It is a multi-stage unit that is deployed after he slows his decent. I believe he should be hitting super sonic speeds shortly after he jumps, and then the majority of his decent is going to be his slowing and eventual deployment of canopy.

That makes sense, a lot of technology is going into this jump. I think they have been working on this for well over a year, I remember reading about it a while ago. red bull certainly has an big budget for stunts.
heres a screenshot of the suit :

I was surprised at how super thin the baloon is though, seems rather dangerous.

Unfortunately here none of the tv stations give a damn so I have resort to watching it on youtube. I am curious though; how the hell is he going to break through the earth's atmosphere?

I think that he's inside of it, but at the very very very very top.  Or, very close to it.

Yes he isnt going to be so high up that he would burn up so there is no reentry. He is just pushing the edge. Thats why he will be able to make mach 1 because the air is so thin the reduction in friction will allow it.

Should be good, hope he makes it!

Ah makes sense then...Curious...if you were to freefall from above the earth atmosphere would it be like hitting a solid brickwall and/or would you burnup? I would imagine his bones must be crushed in the process...
