Overclocking EVGA 1GB 8400GS, random weirdness/crashes

Thread Starter
Hi there, long time lurker first time poster. I'm here to inquire about a weird problem I've been having with my overclocked 8400GS (yes I know it's old).

The stock clocks are as follows:
Core: 520MHz
Memory: 600MHz
Shader: 1238MHz
Voltage: 1.000v
Idle Temp: 36-38C Load: 40-42C

I've successfully managed to get the clocks up to following numbers:
Core: 740MHz
Memory: 700MHz
Shader: 1762MHz
Voltage: 1.000v
Idle Temp: 40-42C Load: 45-49C

I am using nVidia drivers 306.23 and EVGA Precision X 3.0.3 on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64. The issue is when my GPU is under Performance Level 3 (reaching the fully OC numbers) the drivers like to randomly crash out of nowhere. I've managed to play Team Fortress 2 successfully with the OC numbers for multiple hours before everything crashes, other times the drivers crash within a few minutes.

The part I can't seem to fix without rebooting is my GPU gets thrown back to Performance Level 2 and is stuck there at 405/405/800MHz and will not go any higher until I restart and Precision applies the OC again.

Sorry but I'm not even going to try to help you. First welcome to ocn I was a 2 year lurker before I made my account. Can you also post you rig aka all of your computer so we can better help you. And yes the 8400GS is very. very, very old so old I think its pointless to help you (sorry) but even an super 50% overclock won't do much in terms of any game release in the last three years. Please upgrade, even a $50 gpu will be 6 times as powerful
