GameStop Cuts PlayStation 3 U.S. Launch Numbers; Analyst Estimates 150-200k Units

Retailer GameStop will be unable to fulfill pre-orders

With all the rabid anticipation surrounding the PlayStation 3, it may sadden many of you to hear that Japan will not be the only territory that will face a cut in its launch numbers.

According to a GameSpot report, North American retailer GameStop (who also runs EB Games) has received a launch allocation that is less than its number of pre-orders.

On October 10, GameStop took PlayStation 3 pre-orders, which sold out nationwide within minutes. Most stores limited pre-orders to eight units, which was based on original Sony estimates on availability.

Now, it appears that many GameStop stores will be unable to honor its "launch day" pre-orders. A GameStop representative confirmed this news, but had no idea as to the extent of the supply shortfall.

"We are beginning to notify our customers that our initial shipment of PS3 systems will not be what we expected," the representative said. "As this is not an ideal situation, we are asking employees to wait to purchase systems until the second shipment. We are anticipating having systems to cover reservations before Christmas."

Customers with PS3 pre-orders from GameStop can expect to be contacted by phone shortly to confirm the status of their reservation. Those who will be left out of the initial round on launch day will be given a consolation item of a free used game or DVD of choice valued at $19.99 or less.

This development will have a ripple effect on those who have sold their pre-orders on eBay with the condition that the item will ship on launch day. Many eBay bidders will be very unhappy to learn that the thousands of dollars they spent on a launch-day PS3 will be facing delays.
Update: Analyst Colin Sebastian expects less PS3's on launch day than originally announced by Sony. He says:

"We expect Sony to deliver 150-200k units to stores in the United States for the launch; consumers without pre-orders may find it difficult to locate an available system. We estimate sales of approximately 750k PS3s domestically by year-end. We expect a more robust launch from Nintendo, with at least 1.2 million units sold in the U.S. and up to four million units shipped worldwide by year-end."

Not including Alaska and Hawaii, that is 4166 units available per state but we all know they aren't going to divide it up equally like that

Let's not turn this into a Sony flame war. All companies have logistics problems at some point. Just look at every ATI launch. Pretty much every ATI launch has been a "paper" launch. Very few or no units available, and relatively high demand. The 360 was sold out for the first month it was around. Also, if Sony does crash and burn on PS3, a lot of gamers (including me) will be pretty sad. Personally, I think the PS3 will be a success, as it costs several hundred dollars less than a stand alone Blu-Ray player. At least the Home Theater buffs might buy it. Sure, Blu-Ray could be the next Betamax (still have our Beta lying around...), but it would hurt too many people if it failed. Anyway, that's just my two cents.

I'm going to best buy at noon tomorrow, 21 hours before the store opens.

I'm in Iowa, so I hope I get one. (I most likely will be first in line, if its anything like the 360 lines)

If I can get enough money gathered up, i'm gonna get my friend to buy one and we'll resell it.

ahahahahahahh! I laugh at those kids on eBay paying close to 2 grand for those things, I hope they get ripped off and learn. Because actually most of those things being sold are from Game and EB which shows the sales receipt.

I remember this exact time last year XBOX 360 was being released and people were paying $900 for 'em, 360 days FF and you can find tons of 'em at Best Buy.

I heard the local BB (Woodbridge, VA) had some douche camping this morning and he was kicked out by the local PD.

Not suprised at all. I have a friend that pre-ordered 3 consoles, he plans to sell 2 to pay for his own and some games and such.

I told him that just because he got a pre-order doesn't gauruntee him a console, or even 3 (he went to different stores).

I also told him he was a scumbag for doing that (profiteering)....but that's another story.

360s were selling for upwards of $800 on eBay, and now you can get one easily, and the good games are just starting to come out for it (Gears of War, Oblivion both not available at launch)

I will buy a Wii when the new Smash Bros comes out, and not overpay.

I won't buy a PS3 unless it goes under $400 and has at least 5 games I HAVE to have. I didn't buy my PS2 until it was $150 and was just as happy with it as anyoen else who paid $300+

I don't think he is a scumbag.

I think he's very smart and an entrepreneur. I mean, if I had 3 PS3s myself right now, I'd sell on eBay and let some (ignorant) buyer pay 3 times its original price.

Who here wouldn't want to make a $3,600 profit? Wouldn't you?

I've only owned a game console in my whole life, Sega Genesis and sold it to my uncle 3 months later and ever since I don't pay attention to these things. I can't cope with the controls and the billion buttons to push around to come up with a trick.

I like Keyboard and mouse........shot and kill. As simple as that.

Yeah, so there were about 325,000 ish 360 launch units last year, and almost a million by years end. That is somewhere around twice what the PS3 will have at launch and a few hundred thousand more by years end. Personally I got my 360 on New Years Eve, and was plenty happy with it.
