[Geek] Steam has 15 Linux-compatible games so far

Valve has promised to launch Steam for Linux before the end of 2012, and last month it was confirmed that an external beta would be happening in October. It’s limited to 1,000 people, but the point is Valve seems to be on track to meet the release target of this year.

What we don’t know is how many games Steam for Linux will have when it does launch. Steam for Mac had over 50 on launch day, and while we can’t guarantee that level of support will be reached, we can point to the fact 15 games on Steam support Linux already and therefore should be available on release.

Source.

Not many games, but I am glad to say I have 2 of them already..Definitely going to be trying this out on my laptop, once I get into a position where all the games I want to play work in WINE or natively through Steam then I might go 24/7 to Linux on my desktop again, but then I'm not everyone as I'm not really interested in many new games right now.

I also hazard a guess that UT3, UT2004, RAGE and a few other titles will be on that list eventually too...UT2004, 2003 and 1 all have Linux versions and UT3 and RAGE are OpenGL already, I doubt it'd be that difficult to port them with adequate manpower.

Edit: Herp derp, forgot to copy-paste the title, can a mod fix that for me?

This is uber cool!

Also I think you can edit your own title tongue.gif

*Holds out a fist full of cash* I ditched windows a few months ago and valve is making me not regret it. With wine + steam giving developers a reason to make linux native games, I can't help but be excited

OpenGL has been ahead on futures compared to DX for a while, but DX has been catching up fairly fast...Iirc OpenGL has better image quality (Hence why it's used so often for CAD, etc) and is possibly a little more efficient than DX. The PS3 and Wii use variants of OpenGL, while the 360 uses DirectX.

As for Windows and Ubuntu, games would tend to run faster than or just as fast as Windows on your average Linux distro, I saw a increase in performance in Minecraft even though my laptop is running AMD drivers. (Which can be a PITA to update, use, etc on Linux, although they haven't been too bad for me even compared to nVidia)
