Kitten, what stepping 955 you got btw? If its very early revision your OCing potential might be a bit lower.

Thanks for all the advice guys , I'm waiting for my ssd to come in the mail before I reboot my pc into bios .. I'm also hosting a chat room so i'm holding off for a bit but , I loved the advice and I'm gonna try and follow it the best I can , I got the 95 oem 955 off new egg so I'm not entirely sure

I have that board as well, it sure is a decent board for the price. It only has 4+2 phase VRM but they are solid quality VRM's and sinked. You won't want to be pushing an FX octo to 4.8+, but a Phenom II to 4ghz will be fine, as long as you monitor temps.

Gah, I always forget about NB because my old ass AM2+ board doesn't have the options unlocked in the BIOS. But yeah, NB will be a huge benefit to OCing the 955 as these chips love them some northbound OC(which is probably why I am limited on top of my crappy VRM's).

I didn't think about stepping either. Fuell is right, depending on stepping you may not be able to push it as far as you want. As far as Phenom's go C3 is usually the stepping you want for the best OC potential. This is information you can find from running CPU-Z.

The vcore needed for 3.4GHz seems a tad high (considering its a C3) headscratch.gif

Follow Gappo's OC guide as linked above and you're golden thumb.gif

Don't forget about the NB since Phenoms/Denebs love a good overclock on the NB and gives you a nice performance boost wheee.gif.

SSD's are fun! Which one did you get? Also, make sure to check if the BIOS is set to AHCI or not. When I did my parents computer (first time installing SSD) I didn't know this, and was freaking out thinking something was faulty. Wouldn't boot or anything. A simple switch to AHCI and it was fine. Just a heads up in case you run into this issue and freak out without knowing whats happening like me.

Yea, its good to get to know your hardware and know the limits of your exact chip. And though it might seem like yet another small thing to look out for, it'll become second nature when you do this enough. Like I said, it will always seem daunting the first few times, but its actually quite simple, especially since you have an unlocked chip.

That said, every chip is different. Good luck with the new SSD and your OC. Put together, it should be a nice little performance boost. Snappy systems are funner.

C3! Looks promising. vcore, if you haven't changed it, should be nothing to worry about. A lot of systems default them to higher than needed vcores. My Athlon II 635 started at 1.45v at default, not sure why... now with a mild OC its still at 1.45v, though I planned to try to undervolt it a little, but I forgot. Good reminder.

Edit2>
As for Bottleneck, you'd likely be close to hitting it, but if you get to 4ghz you should be fine. If it does bottleneck (check your GPU usage) you could take care of it easily with a small upgrade of CPU later on (if needed). I'd buy a nice 960 used on the marketplace and try to pawn your 955 off on ebay or locally through craigslist or kijiji or w/e equivalent. And you'd likely end up with a zero/low cost upgrade. I do this often and almost get free upgrades.

i missjudged and the words i say propably you dont understant it
we are all fans here of the pc and all we have spend a lot of money and a lot of days to learn a lot of the pc's
but we cant change the nature of the things.the factories have a reason to built something and then built something better whatever is that .
if we change the factory specifications soon or later we will destroy it,thats the truth thats the reality of the things.
somewhere you win and somewhere you loose.
to overcklock a cpu ex amd phenom quad core from 2.1 to 3.0ghz it is not going to be better from amdfx 8120 eight core 3.1 even the god land from the sky!
for us who are fans it is right to do that and we like it but the right thing is not to do.
if i want a better cpu or a graphic card simple i buy the better one!
i cant make a fiat punto run faster or the same with a porcshe i wiil destroy the car soon or later!
thanks!

You forget one very important thing. Not everybody has the spare cash to go and buy new parts at will. So your point is moot.

Overclocking is a passion that drives people to get the most out of their hardware and I see nothing wrong with that as long as its done in a professional way while sticking to safe limits.

And you got your theories mixed up. I'm not overclocking my quad to try and beat an FX 8150, I do it to get the most I can in terms of performance. Why? Every processor is an untapped resource. You just need to learn how to harvest all that potential.

This site shouldn't even exist going by your theory. Factory settings. Pfft rolleyes.gif
