Torn up on GPU upgrade.

Thread Starter
I was looking to upgrade out of my GTX 580, since I've now got myself a 2560x1440 monitor, and not all games are maxing on it with good framerate. I've been out of the loop on hardware for a while, so I started reading up a lot last week, and put my GTX 580 on Craigslist.

I don't know what would be my choice of video cards. I have a tender spot in my heart for NVIDIA and PhysX(most games I currently play a lot use PhysX quite a bit), and I really don't want to have to deal with SLI microstuttering, so a dual GPU card or a dual GPU solution is out of the question.

That's pretty much why I thought I would get a GTX 680, but I'm hesitating between the 2GB and the 4GB one. Money isn't an issue, and I'd like this card to last me a good while. I read that over 2GB is pretty much a requirement for those playing on 5000+ resolution with double or triple screens, but I honestly can't be bothered to care about this.

The question: Should I concern myself with the futureproof of the video card if I pick the 2GB option instead of the 4? Would that come and bit me in the rear in a few months time? Because it's not adding much more to my initial investment.

Thanks for your time.

Hey there buddy. I am also a 1440p gamer and we have a 1440p+ club going on in the forums, Check my signature.

I have a 670 GPU and very happy with how it behaves. However even with a single 670 or a 680 you can not max BF3 and play stable at 60 fps. There will be some dips to 50s. It is expected. The only solution to get a stable 60 fps gameplay at Max settings would be a SLI setup. Or you will have to lower some of the settings.

If you have a single monitor 2gb is enough. In today's Gaming industury with 1440p the games that might suffer in 2GB are Skyrim with lots of mods, or Crysis 2 with Dx11 and high res texture pack. But we can not say for sure what the next year will bring. How will Gta5 or Crysis 3 will suck up our vrams. Thats why I went with the 4GB route. My 670 is 4gb and i am happy with it. Today it does not help much but in the future it might. If you can spare the money always go with the higher vram BUT if you are someone who upgrades his GPU every year or so and if you are thinking of getting a 7xx series GPU next year than grab a 670 or a 680 with 2GB of vram and you will be set.

If you are not playing Crysis 2 with texture packs, or if you are not playing Skyrim witn tons of texture mods than the 2GB is for you. BUt again if you will carry this GPU for the next 2-3 years 4gb might be better. One of the reasons I got the 4GB was because I will SLI it and skip the 7xx series GPUs.

At that resolution the bandwidth of HD7900 series will come in handy compared to GTX 670/ 680.
As the latter cards might suffer in some games because of their low bandwidth especially when AA is turned on.
They might do good for now but later this year or early 2013 the 670/ 680 may not made the cut compared to the HD7950/ 7970.
But if you are only concerned with Nvidia and Nvidia only. I would get a 4 GB 670 FTW and save some money over the 680 since the difference between them is less than 10% and the price point is much higher on the 680.

With multiple monitors you would be better served going 7970 I'm afraid.

Imo buying Current Gen Flagship cards in October is kinda pointless unless you really want the 3 month of gaming experience on the front end, in 3-4 month you can either get the next gen card or get the current gen card for cheap. But if your 580 is already sold , 7950/7970 is a good way to go given a mutli-monitor setup.

Whatever you do, don't get a 680. It is the worst in price/performance among all 4 single GPU Flagship level cards: HD7950/7970 & GTX 670 all can reach/surpass 680 performance with mild OC and all cost way less.

If you plan to upgrade your GPU often like Sherlock said, my money is on buying a used GTX 670 or 7950/70. It'll give you the performance you need for now, in a year who knows. When I used one GTX 670 2GB I hit the vram ceiling with Skyrim (all 2-4k resolution textures, water changes, dof and enb changes). It played damn near constant 60fps @ 1440p and iARDAS is spot on with BF3, depending on your own configuration you can expect dips even down to mid/high 40s. Its best to grab a new 3gb+ vram card from next gen release imo.

I'd grab a Gigabyte 7950 3gb for $321, best bang for buck from what I've seen and it'll hold you over till the new generation if those prospects interest you.

Actually, it's not yet sold. Still debating. I could probably get around 300-350$ for my GTX 580(or so it seems if I check the kind of offers I received off CL), which is still a good chunk of money. My main issue is also the fact that the HDMI port on my GTX 580 isn't working; it detects my TVs(tried two different TVs on known, working cables), but I can't get it to display anything. Of course the potential buyers were advised of this already.

So if I wait 3-4 months, I'm also waiting 3-4 months to use my HDTV setup in my living room. Of course I could RMA my GTX 580, but that means I can't be on my computer for 2 weeks minimum, though I am starting to think about doing that regardless...

EDIT: Thanks for the replies, people. I'd probably stick to NVIDIA if I end up changing, 670 or 680. Read a lot on the 670 and it seems like a better bet, but for some reason some part of me wants the 680 regardless.

For 1440p monitor get a HD 7950 OC if you want best value for your money. these cards scale very well with overclocking and can hit 1.15 - 1.2 Ghz . clock for HD 7950 is 3 - 5% slower than HD 7970. The Gigabyte HD 7950 OC is the pick with one of he best coolers out there. well suited for 1.2 Ghz overclocks. comes with sleeping dogs game which is a very nice value add thumb.gif

Hehe ypou are like me. I also cant give up on Nvidia for the technologies it brings to the table. But if you dont use FXAA, Adaptive vsync of Physx than Ati would be a better buy.

IF you can get like $300 from your 580 there is no harm and adding $100 to get a GTX 670 2GB. IT WILL make you happy in 1440p.

If you can do the waiting game than wait but Although ATI's 8xxx GPUs seems to be coming sooner, i am not sure that Nvidia 7xx series will be here so soon. You might end up waiting 6 months if you want to stick with Nvidia.
