I've ordered some heatsinks anyway.

Are there any symptoms I should look out for of overheating vrms or will they just make the system unstable

CPU throttling or system shutdown despite acceptable CPU temps might point that out. The later rev BIOSes on the 970A-DS3 should be like the 970A-D3 and UD3 and have a VRM protection feature.
