Yeah, I've talked to an intellectual property lawyer and he thought it was hilarious that we had these technically illegal DVRs for so long without anyone doing anything. I think they are actually putting in a law that allows them in Canada soon.

No one seems to be that eager to sue people over intellectual property violations from individuals who pirate in Canada, though. It's probably due to the fact that the court system here makes you pay the opponent's legal charges if you tried to sue them and lost.

This needs to happen in the US.

First, you can thank pirates as PART of the reason pricing is high in this country. In order to compensate for the excessive bandwidth that pirates use an ISP has to pay for higher capacity backbones, increasing their overhead! All so the negative impact you feel is minimized. Overhead costs go up, pricing goes up, that is buiness. The rest you can look to the FCC, they love to keep a knife in the back of innovation and expansion as it pertains to our infrastructure.
Second, it isn't a self righteous opinion, it is fact! I busted my ass at a young age, and sacrificed much, to build my own business and become an ISP. You know the inspiration? I couldn't get high speed internet at my home, and no company expressed interest. That left only one solution, do it myself. There is no way in hell I am going to let a thief sit and cause financial loss to my business, all because they feel they are above the law and can steal others work.
So please, educate yourself before you speak. As I am sure you would throw a rager if someone walked into your home and stole your computer, the product of your efforts.
EDIT:
Let me put my flame proof suit on here.......
Anytime anyone sits and cries out about the "big corporate greed monster" or the "1%", really any entity that is successful I just laugh. As all I see are people who are too lazy to actually work, and instead of dedicating energy towards achieving success, they decide to sit and complain about others success. It makes me sick to think that most of the people that do this are near my age.
Grow up, get a job, or start your own business. You are about the only person that is responsible for your success in life! I grew up poor, if I can do it, than anyone else can. All it comes down to is drive and the willingness to make sacrifices.

You'll never, ever get through to these thick-headed, greedy people who think they're entitled to whatever the 'f' they want regardless of the expense to the people they take/steal from. I'm in charge of an IT firm creating solutions for enterprise-level problems and unfortunately, a lot of smaller firms unwilling to pay the tens of thousands to buy our product and receive our support tend to think it's OK to steal our hard work and do so without paying a dime. Thankfully, the owner(s) are legitimate hard-asses who don't accept it. We've caused a firm in Austin, Texas and another in Champaign, Illinois to go bankrupt and lay off about 150 staff (combined) all because they decided to steal.

On OCN, that equals "omg! you guys are idiots/douches". Just like being against the stealing of music (because some - lol "research" study - said it's BENEFICIAL), games (torrenting because game companies don't make PERFECT games), and movies (because "they wouldn't see them in theaters anyways bro!"). These people lack the ability to think critically and realize that there exists a whole ecosystem of people being screwed, not just the '1%' [ who have the right to make money! ]...there is a whole bunch of envy towards to haves from the OCN have nots.

not saying stealing is right but you do sound like a jerk... tons of people lost jobs, and most of them aren't the ones who decided to steal.

You obviously don't see the big picture, how many kids now have families with no jobs/money can't pay mortgage etc because one dude at the company decided to pirate some software? Does the punishment fit the crime? Might as well just say execute them for someone elses crime.

Again, that's not my problem. I'm merely pointing out the severity of punishment for criminal acts. Please, with the welfare system in place, there's almost no downside to losing a job. Free cell phones, $10 Internet from Comcast, $400 Link card, $600 "survival money", low rent, etc. Unless change occurs, people will be more than happy to suck on the teat of the government and rely on them.

My care bucket for those families: 0.

Do you know how incredibly stuck up you sound? People like you are a much bigger problem in today's society than pirating will ever be.

Rich guy #4958293 pretending he is above everyone around him. Actually, I forgot this is the internet. In reality, you are probably describing yourself. If anyone is thick headed and greedy, it is you. Not the other people in this thread.
