Anything with a 670M/680M is quite nice, and impressive for a laptop.
Don't get anything less then a 650M if going Nvidia.

As for the SSD's if your raiding them then they aren't fast enough. biggrin.gif
I would look at the Agility 4's.

My XPS has SATA6 I'll probably get an Octane or Agility 4 in the future and use my 500GB 7.2k as my second drive.

Holy.... ok fair point. So no on the 7970s?...

This was the rig by the way. I had to drop the mSATA drive to keep the price below the £1.5k but I can always push my budget a little bit harder if I have to. redface.gif

Not really true. The 7970M overclocks "better" but the 680M picks up faster. Even just maxing out the GPU core on the 680M (+135mhz) will score 7k in 3DMark11. tongue.gif The 7970M won't break 6.8k @ 1000/1200.

I feel like I'm going in circles a little bit here.

I'm not going to lie, I'm looking for a reason to fall in love with the dual AMD set up. I think I've just burned about 3 hours reading around and looking at benchmarks and reviews of cards and it's boiling down to one thing now. Drivers.
Please don't let this turn into a flame war, I really need some honest opinions here. smile.gif

I've had a lot of experience with Nvidia drivers and I cannot recall ever actually having a problem with them. My experience is that if a new game is due out, Nvidia will poop a new driver accordingly for it.
The moment I Google "7970m Crossfire", I get some truly scary articles appearing that refer to AMDs driver support as awful, particularly on the mobile variants.

Has anybody tried a X-Fire mobile set up on this forum and could they sooth my concerns?

The 12.9 Beta driver set has solved every problem I had with drivers with my 7970M. The Crossfire issues weren't detrimental to performance in games, unless you played things like BF3, which is still a "new" game in itself.

I would honestly go for the 7970M Crossfire since your budget is restricting you to do so. You won't regret it. smile.gif

I can't push the budget up to 1.8k. frown.gif For 1.8k I'd get the two 680s! biggrin.gif
About £1.6k is my limit. After that I don't eat. Or can't put fuel in the car.
Also there's loads of config options on there I could unselect and get the laptop down in price. smile.gif
Don't need an OS for starters and after reading around on the forums, it turns out they only apply that thermal paste on the CPU. Plus I'd raid it myself rather than waste £9.

To be honest with you I have so much space external on the network I don't think I even need the 1TB worth of drives but as this is something of an investment, I'd want the bells and whistles.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm tempted to just go back to my original plans as I know for a fact it'll be a single 680m would be a good performer and I won't have to worry about scaling problems. I know I'm uming and aring, does crossfire scale that well? After looking at the list of games that really use Physx, it doesn't seem like something I should be that concerned about.

Crossfire and SLI both scale very well, provided your CPU is up to par. The 3630QM is more than adequate for this task. tongue.gif

It's up to you in the end. tongue.gif I'm just trying to help out as much as possible. tongue.gif

Thread Starter
And you've been exceptionally helpful. thumb.gif I'm just a awkward bugger. I'm more inclined towards the 7970s and the laptop seems to be a nicer build anyway. Money goes into my account either tomorrow or Wednesday so I'll be committing then!

Yet another daft question... the CPU isn't going to turn out to be a bottleneck with all that graphical power now is it?

Oh no. The 3630QM is blindingly fast. It's no slouch in any regard. biggrin.gif You'd be hard pressed to make that thing the bottleneck. X3
