Multiple RAID's on 1 drive?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I was thinking of getting a new hard drive or two, for using in a RAID for my signature rig below. My question is: If I had my current hard drive and a new hard drive, both same size and manufacturer in a RAID 1 (isn't that faster read/writing?) and then I had another hard drive that was 2 TB in size (because 2x1 TB HDD) in a RAID 0 (data backup?) with the two other HDD's in their different RAID, would that work?

I sort of doubt it would, but if it did, that would be really awesome. smile.gif

Not sure that you're understanding how raid works smile.gif

Raid 0 = striping of the drive, with 2x 1TB drives you will have 2 TB of total space with no backup
Raid 1 = mirroring, 2X 1TB drive gives you 1TB of total space, it is fast on reads, slow on writes (as it has to write to both the same data at the same time, can be a bit slower than a single drive)
Raid 5 = using 3 or more disk, gives you parity and faster speeds <--- this is the one you want, but you need another 1TB drive otherwise if you do use a 2TB drive, only 1TB will be usable, its going to give you ~ 2TB of usable data.

Just make sure that your motherboard supports Raid 5 as some only support 0 and 1 thumb.gif

Raid 0 - striped - faster read/write
Raid 1 - mirror - no performance gain on read/write.

Are you talking about 4 drives and having raid 10 ? - which is practically never used.

I may be misunderstanding, but are you asking if you can have two arrays on the same controller?

If that's your question, then yes you can, I do it all the time.

As far as your setup though, you don't want your backup on the RAID 0. You'd want to use the RAID 0 for boot or for games/files you edit, and RAID 1 for storage. I know you're thinking to make a larger drive with RAID 0, but if your storage is on RAID 0 and one drive fails, you lose it all. If one fails in RAID 1, the other drive still has all the data.

Honestly 2x1TB R0 for boot is a little much, but since you have the drives why not?

What I would do is this:

Boot drive: SSD. $79 for Samsung 128GB on 'Egg right now
Overflow/storage/games that won't fit on the SSD: 2x1TB RAID 0. Debatable, and kinda overkill.
Backup: 2x1TB RAID 1.

Alternatively, you could have an SSD as boot and make a giant RAID 5 array with all 4 1TB drives, but you'd better know what you're doing if a drive fails or deteriorates, 'cause if you pull the wrong one and the array tries to rebuild with a defective drive you'll lose everything.

Thanks for the replies all! I think I'm talking about RAID 5.

I mean could I have disks overlapping in RAIDS? So a HDD is both in RAID 0 and 1? That was sort of my question. smile.gif

I think what he's asking is can he put two 1TB drives in RAID0 (You have RAID0 and RAID1 mixed up by the way TS), then put that logical drive into a RAID1 with a 2TB drive. I think the way you'd have to go about that would be to set up a hardware RAID0 with a RAID controller (your motherboard probably has one built in) then set up a software RAID1 in windows between the logical RAID0 drive, and the 2TB drive. Honestly I don't think it'd be any better than getting two more 1TB drives (totalling 3 drives) and then going with a RAID5, which would be much simpler. Then again, this is overclock.net, so simple may be out of the question biggrin.gif
