[GI] Treyarch defends Call Of Duty Engine

Treyarch game design director David Vondehaar has defended the 7 year old Call Of Duty engine it inherited from Infinity Ward, which it's currently using a version of for Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2.

"Anybody who comes at the engine needs to remember it's the 60 frames they love in the first place," Vondehaar told OXM.

"And we can make it beautiful - that's through years and years of working with the engine, improving upon it and improving the pipeline and improving our approach, our lighting rendering."

"People like to talk about the engine, but the truth of the matter is that this isn't like something that was invented six years ago," he went on. "At this point that engine doesn't resemble anything like any engine - we've ripped out the UI system, the rendering and the lighting are all new, the core gameplay systems are all new."

It's not bad given it's age and what it can do with outdated Xbox 360 hardware, but I hope they move to something more powerful (assuming it's at it's limits as is) for next gen consoles.

We're in the home stretch... one more year and hopefully developers will be pushing more complex engines and much better graphics. Only sad part is it'll mean another 7-10 years of the same level of graphics... *sigh*

You can bet that they either have a new engine already up and running, or that they have branched off the current engine and have basically turned up the dials on it in preparation for better hardware. There's no way a company as large as Activision wouldn't be scrambling to take advantage of the upcoming changes.

Basically this. It's acceptable only because of consoles being dated.

Then again, I haven't bought a COD since MW1 because of the lack of progress.

For the first time I don't hate on Call of Duty. They acctualy ARE part of the huge FPS world. They did brought new stuff to the table.

I think this new release: BOPs 2, Will be a good release for the guys behind the game. Not activition. I hate them. But the guys who acctualy make the game. I just want CoD to be like it was before. Cod4 and WaW style...

Always the same old excuses..
The engine is 13 years old at it's core!

"People like to talk about the engine, but the truth of the matter is that this isn't like something that was invented six years ago," he went on. "At this point that engine doesn't resemble anything like any engine - we've ripped out the UI system, the rendering and the lighting are all new, the core gameplay systems are all new."

And yet, every single CoD game from CoD4 looks and plays exactly the same!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the COD engine at it's core just the Quake III engine?

Correct, 1999.

Yes, but time has moved on.
There are enough current day engines that are easy to program and cheap to use: UE3 for example.
It's just lazy.
