This has nothing to do with control methods nor graphical quality. Look at BF3, it is the perfect example of why & how consoles are ruining PC gaming:

-Dumbed-down gameplay.
-Stripped features.
-Insane amount of time in-between patches

Screw consoles, and screw developers like DICE who are low enough to turn on their own fanbase to make more money.

I think it's more the fact that because COD is insanely popular it is having an effect on pretty much most games of similar genre. FPS is the most popular genre in gaming and pretty much most of them are clones are close to being clones of COD. It's stopping more creative ways to approach the FPS genre because sticking to the COD basics is a cheap cop out as it's obviously what the majority of gamers that are fans on the genre want.

IMO the franchise is a perfect representation of a game stopping innovation of a genre, much like consoles in general are stopping a lot of innovation on PC gaming.

COD is never going to go away until people flat out stop buying it. There's no way Activision is going to give up on a franchise that has become a household name.

They defend their engine every time a "new" cod is released. It's getting pretty pathetic on their part.

We need new consoles soon. That way the games get better tech and the PC ports of these games can be better presented to PC gamers.

I agree. Personally I think the FPS genre should retrograde back to the 90s, with modern engines and graphics of course. I would love to see another Quake, Unreal or Duke Nukem 3D like game with fast pacing, unrealistic physics, great level design, colorful graphics, and weapons that were crafted mostly out of imagination and not from guns that exist in the real world.

personally i haven't been a fan of COD online since MW1 after that it just felt like the same game to me, it had nothing to do with graphics I just find it boring now. what I want to see extended and improved is single player at roughly £40 in the UK (Haven't looked at BO2 prices) I want to get more than just a 8 hour story line where at least half of it is just cut scenes. I dont want to watch a short clip of the main characters doing stuff I want to actually do it and i want open spaces much like the first Crysis where I can choose how to proceed instead of just running and shooting in a straight line.

as others have already said its not so much the graphics, yes they are rubbish but the media in which the content is on i.e consoles. for quite sometime now consoles have been quite outdated and the main part is the discs they use (well the 360 mainly) they have to try and cram a lot onto a single disc with very little storage space, hopefully next gen consoles will change this

that's my thought on it at least anyway

Sure, the engine is old, looks dated. I doubt many can deny that. However they have not improved the gameplay any in years. I used to be a massive fan, I'm a amazing twitch player. But I dislike that I feel I'm playing a reskin of the same game I bought 4 years ago. And in addition they charge for reskin of maps.
