[GI] Treyarch defends Call Of Duty Engine - Page 8

"Anybody who comes at the engine needs to remember it's the 60 frames they love in the first place," Vondehaar told OXM.
Wow, clearly shows why the engine is still there. All these guys care about is ensuring 60FPS, clearly focusing on consoles.

He needs to pull his head out and realise gamers want more then 60FPS.

I can say without a doubt I do not love 60FPS...

Grass and textures look absolute junk. Also, 60 FPS is a feature? lol

Making games for consoles is all about making sacrifices and cutting corners.

Anyone wanting the CoD engine to "look better" has no idea how difficult it is to make things look better on 6-7 year old console hardware while holding the 60 fps benchmark. Yes, 60 fps is important. The motion blur and input lag at 30fps is unbearable.

But that's the whole point, the game isn't 60fps..... It averages around 40fps on the digital foundry videos.

Well then that means they need to water down the graphics and optimize it even more, doesn't it?

In short
"we can't make anything that looks better because consoles are crap and we don't give a dam about PC , hordes of CoD zombies will buy it anyway so why even bother"

It certainly doesn't tick all the Dx10/11 check boxes but the huge art budget really shines when you take the time to get them looking right on a PC. Tell me these screens aren't amazing. All taken with a combination of SGSSAA and downsampling. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I actually think the first picture is a good reason why the games don't look good.

Low quality textures all over the place. Look at where the bar counter meets the floor. Huge contrast, not only because there's no dirt on the counter, but because the dirt on the floor is really blurry. The couch on the left is not only low res, it's also very low poly. More low res dirt by the couch. Glass pieces on the floor look horrible. Bar stools don't have shadows. Look at the table Soap is lying on, it's not a wooden table, it's a brownish blob; even more when compared to Soap's detailed clothes textures.
More low quality textures on the concrete in the second picture.

Besides that the game has a huge aliasing problem which is even apparent in this screenshot with SGSSAA.

Also look at the third picture, where his hybrid scope practically looks like something user-made from Second Life. It looks like a total afterthought compared to the holographic sight (closeup here).

These texture problems could easily be fixed if they made textures for PC first. It's clear that they're limited by console RAM, but they choose not to deal with the problem on the PC.

Sssshh someone might try and get high and mighty on you. thumb.gif

Ontopic: This is as old as the source engine, but in comparison the source engine was built to be upgraded upon. I dont think the IW engine was meant to do that originally.

Funny thing is that you guys are arguing about The COD engine but most think the engine is Unreal it is not it is in fact a heavily modified version of the Quake III engine called "IW Engine" .

While I fully understand these guys wanting to make as much money as they can its a shame that they destroyed a game I really enjoyed as a PC gamer .

I think that with all the games being geared to consoles I may just give up on gaming all together ,unless the hardware manufactures step up and insist the they make some improvements for PC I see no reason to spend a $1000 on GFX cards let a lone all the other high end gear to play these games with full immersion and all the prettiness that the PC can bring to these games .

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare MW3 engine 2011 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's IW 4.0 engine

Call of Duty: Black Ops II Black Ops II engine 2012 Call of Duty: Black Ops's IW 3.0 engine

I guess the reason they are getting flack is because they went backwards with the latest COD . so yea KEEP BEING LAZY DEVS thumb.gifthumb.gif good job
