Opinion on memory

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm finally upgrading my laptop. One of the slots on the motherboard is dead so I will be buying a single 4gb module. I can't decide between these two.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226020
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233080

They both seem to be the same, so any opinions? They're both good brands in my opinion, so any advice is welcome, or if you have an alternative around the same price. I can't do anything with a higher clock speed, so I chose those with the lower timings.

Well, just from reviews I would say grab the mushkin. They are both the same specs, so performance will be the same. So just get the one with better reviews.

I was going to say corsiar, but it is rated bad on newegg. Mushkin is strictly a memory manufacturer, so I would trust them more anyway.

If the hardware specs are the same, choose the company with the best warranty. If the warranties are the same, choose the ones with the best support and/or turnaround time. This'll require some reading, if you're up for it.

So, I got the Mushkin memory. It got here, installed it, appeared fine in the bios, but won't boot. Just get a black screen with a white cursor. Tried a BIOS update, nothing. Guess my laptop doesn't support it.

Sorry to hear that. Since you can boot, try reinstalling the ram / making sure it seats properly. You might call Mushkin and see what they have to say about compatibility. Calling your laptop OEM may or may not be helpful. My friend owned a Dell and when he called them about compatible memory for an upgrade, they gave him a hard sales pitch about buying additional memory from Dell (at twice the price) rather than offering any useful advice. FYI - whatever DRAM you buy as a replacement must be able to run at the same voltage as the ram you are replacing. I don't own a laptop, but from a quick check on NewEgg, it seems that 1.5v is standard voltage so that shouldn't be the problem unless your laptop uses lower voltage DRAM for some reason. If you do send the Mushkin back, I recommend the G-Skill someone posted above. G-Skill tech support is good and I've been using G-Skill DDR3 for over two years on my PC with zero problems..

Good luck.

Well, a quick Google search suggests that this is common with Toshiba laptops. Apparently the best bet is to get Kingston memory. I'll be examining my options on newegg, then putting in a RMA.

EDIT:

I found this set on newegg.

For those with a Toshiba Satellite A665 or any Toshiba you know that our laptops are the most finicky about what brand, voltage, and speed we stick in it. This KVR is definitely compatible.

So, I think that would be a good way to go.

^ There could be more possible issues here.

1. The RAM slot (and not that RAM module) is dead
2. The new RAM module you received is dead

Between generic memory kits there shouldn't be any motherboard compatibility issues given the flexibility in new on-CPU IMCs.
