Problems with video signal on HTPC and P8Z68M-Pro

Thread Starter
I posted this over in the motherboard forums but no luck over there. Maybe someone here can help out or have ran into something simliar

I'm completely stumped on this and was hoping someone can give me a hand. I've been having alot of problems with P8Z68M-Pro and the onboard video. I'm using this as an HTPC with an i3 2105 connecting it throuh HDMI to my receiver. Once it boots into Windows the video signal is lost. If I leave it like that for an hour or so then the video signal will come back on and all is well. It's almost as if it has to warm up. Also I have to leave the receiver on. If i turn it off it runs into this issue.

I've tried connecting it directly to the TV and the issue persists. I've even tried using several different video cards to no avail. After exhausting my own resources I sent the motherboard back to Asus for RMA. They returned it back to me after testing it and said there weren't any issues. After reinstalling Windows I'm still running into the same issue.

All drivers including bios is up to date. At this point I dont know what to do. I dont think its my TV or receiver since I can use my bluray player and PS3 with no problems. Plus connecting this computer to a different monitor i still run into this problem.

Also another weird problem I noticed is that when I reinstall Windows I can only have my SSD connected to any of the sata ports. Once Windows is installed I can then go back in and connect my other hard drives. But the more hard drives I have connected the longer it takes to boot into Windows. With only the SSD its seconds to boot. But with my other hard drives (4 of them) connected it takes over 45 seconds to boot.

What power supply are you using for the htpc? It could be a PSU issue.

Check in BIOS which graphics boot priority mode is set (using integrated graphics should be iGPU-PCIE-PCI), try removing all expansion cards (if applicable) and boot.

Check iGPU multi-monitor setting, force Disable if you use slot#0 (X16, blue) for other expansion cards to rule out card compatibility problems (slot#0 is the first one where system looks for a video BIOS with iGPU multi-monitor enabled, and the first it calls in a SLI/XF config). Stability problems can arise with a video card installed and iGPU enabled (tested with Intel+AMD and it worked, but some AMD/Nvidia/Intel display driver combos can have trouble working together).

Check the HDMI cable you use. If after a temp settling time period it works try cleaning HDMI connectors with dry or slightly lubricating contact-cleaner, we had this problem on an old LD player with the S-video jack.

Check SATA configuration, set to at least AHCI mode and Hotplug enabled on all ports (if you use Intel RST driver), ensure SRT (HDD+SSD caching) feature is disabled. Connect boot drives and bootable ODDs to odd numbered ports (SATA6G_1, SATA3G_1, SATA3G_3), otherwise in some configurations they won't boot. Use SATA6G_E1 dark blue connector only if you must connect 7 devices internally, if you don't use it and don't use the eSATA port disable the ASMedia controller to free up resources.

otherwise I don't know biggrin.gif

Also run diskcheck, as a file system problem may be the cause of the delay in the system ( up to a hour for a Tb drive ).

After some more trail and error and a few different combination of motherboards and processors (thanks newegg!) I think i've narrowed it down to my receiver.

What receiver is everyone using? Is anyone using one specifically with an i3 2105?

I have a 2120T which is HD2000 vs. your HD3000. I have it hooked up to a Onkyo TX-NR906 which someone may deem "obsolete" for HDMI features but it is robust, stable, very well built. It uses a HQV Reon scaling/digitizing chipset with Silicon Image HDMI port transceivers/switches, handles wonderfully every video signal I've thrown at it.
Make and model of your receiver? Intel graphics adapters sometimes can be tricky with some cascaded HDMI configurations (HDMI repeater: A/V receiver daisy chained to TV), but then it should work if directly connected to the TV.
If applicable, check HDMI settings in the receiver for auto-lipsync, XVcolor, CEC (device control), ARC (v1.4, audio return channel), Ethernet (v1.4)

I'm using an Onkyo TX-SR606. I checked and most of the settings under hardware for HDMI is disabled. It doesnt have ethernet or ARC.

The 606 has HDMI v1.3 like mine, it should have a Faroudja video chipset similar to the bigger SR806 I had in 2009-2010, which had some problems on HDMI 1080p signal handling. Onkyo receivers can be sometimes tricky for HDMI switching and handshaking with the connected video device, on some models or revisions it can take forever to sync to some signals. Note: the Faroudja DCDi or similar video processor (TX-SR506/606/706/806) supports only YCbCr color space on HDMI. I had problems on my SR806 with the famous "blue dots" issue, I got the video card replaced with a fixed version, the blue dots disappeared in YCbCr but stayed in RGB color space, and since the Faroudja processor cannot be disabled/bypassed (even with the Passtrough setting), this might be a problem if you have a video device that can only output a digital signal in PC RGB color space, i.e. I'm still unable to set Intel HD Graphics to output YCbCr on HDMI, it always uses RGB (limited or full-range), while AMD video cards since the HD4350 can output HDMI video in YCbCr4:4:4/4:2:2 or RGB16-235/0-255 mode.

I use optical digital audio to the receiver and HDMI to the TV, I use an ancient Cyrus decoder that pre-dates HDMI by years, but the audio is superb.
