After running a repair, I like to run a DeFrag...

EDIT: Do not run the recovery console... It's useless, IMO.
Also, noting this help which is not wrong but make sure you check for other inconsistancies. After doing this type of repair most Service Packs and updates are wiped since it basically re-installs from base CD files which we know are not up-to-date.

If this works and you get back in make sure to do a Windows Update to pick them back up.. The patches that is..

When you put the XP Disc in, let it boot off of CD. Follow all of the instructions. You will get to the page where it tells you the Windows XP is installed on a partition, directly after you press F8 to accept the License. Instead of wiping the partiton, Repair the installation. In the bottom portion of the screen, it will say R-Repair (or something like that). Just don't let it throw you into the Recovery Console.

The key is to act as if you are going to do a fresh install, then on practically the last step (before you format your drive) you go Repair instead of Install.

Go thru the Install XP, press F8 to accept, then press R to Repair.

At least it was that way when I did it last.

BTW: you will probably need your key (once Windows has copied all of the files and it has restarted once to continue setup)... but you should have that anyway
