Overclocking my RAM, need some guidance.

I need some help, how would I go about OC'ing my RAM? I want to OC my RAM to be at 1600MHz instead of 1333MHz. My board says I can OC it up to 2000MHz, but 1600MHz is fine. What I'm wondering is do I have to change anything else to have it be stable at 1600MHz. Also will my RAM get to hot if I OC it?

Dont try to get it to 2000mhz lol. Ram really wont get hot at all, even ones without heat spreaders, those are pretty much for looks.

I have gskill value series 1333 9-9-9-24 and I overclocked it to 1600mhz 10-10-10-25 and it runs great. I could probably do something like 9-10-9-24 or something but I just havent tried to tighten the timings yet.

So, try 10-10-10-25 1600mhz @ 1.5v and run maybe intel burn in test with maximum ram and see if its stable. I am sure you can, because I have cheaper gskill running those settings.

trust me, I know what it feels like running 1333mhz, so 1600mhz, even if its no difference in speed between 1333 with tighter timings still makes me feel better.

I am sure it will work, the only thing is I cannot tell you how exactly the ram will overclock, I can only give you guidelines because there is no real formula to overclocking.

You may put 8 CAS on 1333, than 10 on 1600 and it will be faster

Check it with Memtest 86 (burn to disc and load from it.) You will also see memory speed in MB/s so you can see how CAS or MHz affect speed.

Overclocking generic memory is tougher because minimal binning standards may result in you getting a kit that does not budge. I've seen it happen. G.Skill grab bags ICs so it's certainly possible that the ones on your generic kit will have a tough time OC-ing.

 

Try what you can though, perhaps you'll be able to get something with an increase in voltage; i.e. 1.5-1.7v (don't pass 1.7 unless you know you don't have PSCs).  If you want guaranteed RAM overclockability, you should have spent on DDR3-1600. It is a huge step up above generic 1333 standard and has the binning security to get overclockable ICs rather than minimum-standard ICs. Be sure to check your stability.


Given 1600Mhz @ CL9 is marginally faster than 1333 @ CL7 (they're actually about equal) I would guess that 1600 @ CL10 would be better than 1333 @ CL8. You would ideally want to run your 1600@  CL9 or better.
