Trouble with Desoldering DC power jack on my laptop - Page 2

That solder doesn't appear to have any flux in it. You can get rosin-cored solder from radio shack for pretty cheap.
The rosin in the solder will remove the oxide layer on the contacts so there is a better joint as solder does not bond well to oxides well.

First of all though, you may want to get some solder wick (which is really just copper wire) to remove the remaining solder from the holes. You do it by placing the wick onto the solder you want to remove, then place your iron on top of it. It may be a bit difficult to get the new jack in if you don't do this first smile.gif

Thread Starter
I ended up being able to clean off the old solder and attached the new jack. The positive (the copper colored part) is the only part that really mattered and must of been loose. I used a pump, some solder and a better solder iron. Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah those solder pumps are a must have. Most solder has a rating or percentage on the side. When i deal with stuff on motherboards (except for capacitors) like DC jacks i use silver solder, that is solder with little to no lead.

Also pro tip when i use flux or have crap on the board like in your picture i clean it with 95.9% pure rubbing alcohol and tooth brush and i do the same thing when i'm done too.
