My family is in the publishing business so, I actually experience this first-hand.
If you want coverage, you give me a reason to cover you. If you don't give me a reason, it better be damn well worth covering.
I guarantee you that in every single article PCmag does there's an advertisement by the parent-company OR there's some back-scratching.
This system has existed since before the days of Benjamin Franklin and that's not news...In fact, I can find you some inquirers where arguably, Franklin scored a kick-back FOR mentioning certain entities.
Quite frankly, I don't believe that something is news if it's occurred regularly since the 1700's.
I mean, what do you expect? PcGamer to be 100% non-bias and not make any money what-so-ever? They would've never made it this long...You think Cosmo and Newsweek don't follow the same trends? How about People and Guitar Player?
Gamepro certainly did, Game-Informer did before they went on-line, Nintendo did...I'm sorry, it's just not news.

Errm ... Stanton's drunken rant is the news, not the general idea of gaming rags taking bribes. It's like this: the presidential debates are news, not because nobody's ever heard of a presidential debate before, but because we're interested in a specific example of the practice.

This doesn't come as a surprise to me. I only read reviews on amazon between 1-4 stars. The ones giving 5 stars are just promoters.

Woooo, what a shocker. I'm sure IGN would have nothing like this.

As much as I love amazon, but I can't help but laugh at the reviews sometimes.

The product could be a 2 slot toaster and it lists clearly that it is 6" tall, 8" long, and 4" wide, is white, and the reviews look like this:
"This toaster is too small, I was shocked by how small this is!" 3/5
"Doesn't make great pizza" 1/5
"I couldn't use it for my obscure project, but it toasts alright" 2/5
"How do I use the computer, oh god I'm so old" 4/5
"Its a toaster, it makes toast" 5/5
"I had a problem with UPS and it never got delivered" 1/5
"White doesn't match my kitchen" 3/5

All magazines give "nice" (read: increased) scores to products from advertisers' (read: revenue stream). This has been the norm for a long time.
