overclocking beginner with problems and questions

Thread Starter
hi all
this is a newbie thread, please keep that in mind smile.gif
I've finally found a decent site to post this question/problem and to actually get some answers and learn something about OC-ing
my rig is :

ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution Mobo
IntelChipset : X58
ATI Radeon 5870 x x x

Intel i7 930 2.80GHZ Socket 1366 LGA

Mushkin Enhanced Redliner ( 3 x 2gb / 6 all ) 991805 ( 996805 ) Max Bandwith : PC3-107OOH ( 667 MHZ )

my BIOS is updated to latest version, I've just checked
now, let me just explain a bit the history of the problems I have with this rig in particular.
I've never had any intentions of OC-ing any of these components in the first place, just to point that out. ( in my head I was quite happy with the BIOS setting on stock, or so I thought )

After a successful installation of each individual component ( I'm talking about the time I bought the config, back in 2009 ) and then installing the Win7 OS on it, first problem I've encountered was related to I think outdated BIOS version which I've instantly and easily fixed, ( BIOS is still set to auto during this time ), but nonetheless system would freeze during start up and lock every option possible, so only hard reset ( and sometimes even CMOS reset ) was needed.
after an endless struggle across the vast internet sea of forums of which some are really outdated and trying to figure out the root of my problem I've managed to get my hands on the similar but not the same O.C profiles for my Asus WS with that CPU unit, and I took the easy way out, typed already tested values and hoped for the best.
but the same problem occurred some months after that, in fact I think one year actually past with no errors at all, maybe occasional bump here and there but no freeze loops like before.
Now, my system is utterly unstable again.
Every time I start the system, a really strange /loud noise comes from the case and my system won't boot, or even show the BIOS startup window. I need to hard reset it several times to get it beeping and entering to BIOS before I can continue with Win7 startup and it usually enters after that.
During these few last weeks, and many forum threads about my Mobo and CPU unit, I've come to conclusion I need to learn a bit more about my config, and set my BIOS accordingly to actually get a stable and usable system out of this pretty expensive rig. why?
well, from that time I copy/pasted someone else's O.C. profile to my own BIOS, my system managed to get a stable one year run, so I'd like to learn more about the bios settings and to actually understand the reasons for their adjustment.
( p.s.Run on IntelBurnTest or any type of Bench results in almost instant freeze )

now, since I have no OC experience, I'll post my BIOS here with everything set to Auto ( stock values ) and If there is someone who can guide me trough each option and generally explain what it effects and why so that I can get some strategy for this rig, of course it would be a ideal.

You're in luck, this forum has really good OC guides you can search for your particular system.

not sure Ziggie, your system has what looks like 2 types of Ram installed,

Im honestly in a similar boat, no issues with my Sig Rig though, Just Never could figure out Overclocking this platform. Im too oldshcool I guess.

I had a cookie Cutter that I used for a while, but I lost the settings after a reformat and honeslty didnt even notice the speed difference spo Ive not worried about it.

Unfortunately I cant help much, and Ive never used the WS mobo of yours, but if you use the search function Above, I found 100's of threads for Overclocking i7 930, just hit Relevence, and you will find tons of resources

GL thumb.gif

Oh, You dont notice any high temps or anything when you have stability issues do you?

When your PC Doesnt allow you to Boot up at all, do you know if before hand you had recently moved the PC? Mine does that sometimes if I move the PC AT ALL it makes me do a CMOS Update, odd because everything appears tobe secure and properly connected

thankyou, I wanted to approach the issue this way, like I said, tons and tons of forums threads about similar rig is not the same as one with my actual system spec, that's why I'm here

hi Storm.
uhm, maybe I misled you with modul serials, but Mushkin Redline set of ( 2gb ) each is what I had from the beginning, they are not different, it's the same memory build.
as for higher temps, yes, if I go with predefined O.C profiles which are only similar with my config, I get a stable system, but in idle mode, my cpu temp is 42, and if I run just one test, or try to play any of my installed games temp easily rises to 65 or even 75 which is way to high, so I don't do that, I'm currently not testing it.
thankyou for ur input man

So Im going to suggest to you, that you open the side of your case, and Angle a Room Fan to blow Air Onto the Mobo, CPU Cooler, GPU and Chipset etc.

So that it is pushing air across the chipset and sweeping across to the back of the PC (help air flow properly) This will help you Rule heat out as an issue

if doign this you have 0 Stability problems then we know that Heat is the problem

also it should be known that running stuff on Auto is never a good idea.

Set the ram for XMP Xtreme Memory Profile, so that nothing is being over volted.

I doubt that heat is the issue here, I'll try that but I never actually explained that ( my bad ) I have 5 case fans with 6th passive, Thermaltake Armor case is actually built to avoid any heat problems, I don't use stock cooler on CPU, as a matter a fact, I never did, it's still in the box, my cooler is Custom Scythe Yasya SCYS-1000, with new fan ( I just bought a new one 3 months ago ).
I think heat is the issue here but not cause of the fan positions, more because my BIOS is maybe set to the wrong profile, that's why I need someone to maybe explain on an example with my specs, hence I posted everything on auto, as a starting point ( my BIOS is not currently set to AUTO )
Thx

yah its ok, it is always my very first thing I do, problems with PC? Put a room fan, its the only way to guarontee fresh Air is hitting Everything, VRMs, Chipset, GPU, CPU .. It may or may not fix anything, but if its still unstable than you KNOW thta heat is not the issue ;p

always a good idea to Rule issues out to help get to the answer.

of course, I understand, but this is why I'm ruling fans as a possibility
before, I've had my BIOS set to factory settings with a minor tweak of memory latency to a lower values, and bus volt was set to 1.60,and that time system was running for 2-3 days with no errors.after that period freezing started again ( I was not doing any testing, no Prime, mem or Burntesting, I didn't want to overclock, I was happy with stock values, and still the same error persisted ( so, BIOS was not altered, it was basically stock value set on every relevant OC option )
you see, when this freeze occurs, you literally have a dead system, you cannot check a temp level, or any other option what so ever, only thing you can do is to hard reset the system, and then on BIOS enlisting page during startup you have warning - F1 for entering setup or F2 - for loading defaults ( strange huh, it was already on stock values !? )
then, after several attempts with some bad O.C.profiles, I managed to find one stable enough and with it I was overclocking my CPU and therefore everything else on my mobo.
but, after some time of using that profile, my motherboard would just reset itself to default values and again it would enter the same freeze loop like before.
While I was using that profile I was able to play games and do some photoshop editing, but occasionally a random freeze would happen. During that time, I did check my EPU engine to see my temp level, and under stress it would only go high as 55C, which was ok with me, so I was happy with the results ( mind you, I still at this point don't know anything about OC-ing and I'm not 100 % sure if BIOS settings are actually slowly tearing my hardware apart )
I hope I've explained it a bit more this time, I't hard to summarize almost 3yrs in a short thread smile.gif
