I have 4 different televisions in my home. I want to be able to play 2, maybe 3, movies simultaneously from one computer/server. I currently am using a laptop with WMC/windows 7 and streaming movies that I have ripped to my library to 1 xbox360. This is working fine! I had thought about purchasing a Roku 2 xs for another television, which will be two televisions connected at this time.

Is WMC capable of doing this?

I have an HP pavilion desktop that is a brick now. I can use this case, if possible, to build a server. Would it be better to build or buy a server for this purpose? What would I need for this to happen? Maybe later, would add a monitor to access files, say in the kitchen to access recipes stored.

It is best to have a single media server and have smaller boxes that stream the content of the server and serve it to the TV. IT really does not take much to stream HD video... You are looking at ~$250 per box. grab something small like this:
Cheap HTPC (Click to show)
PCPartPicker part list

Memory: G.Skill NS 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($19.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung Spinpoint M7E 320GB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Other: M350 Enclosure with PicoPSU-80 and 60W adapter KIT ($69.99)
Other: ASRock E350M1 AMD E-350 APU (1.6GHz, Dual-Core) AMD A50M Hudson M1 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo ($94.99)
Total: $244.96
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Case
Mobo

Run something like XBMC on it and it will be fine. thumb.gif

I understand that!
What are some media extenders that can be used?
Does the server need an operating system such as windows 7?
Also, for a wired system, do I need a switch to branch from? If so, what type?

I should add that I am new to this and doing this as a hobby!

The server can be anything, It just has to be sharing the folder(s) with the movies over the network. It can be windows, or linux. It doesn't matter.

For a wired system, do you mean LAN? Well if you do, you will probably need a switch, unless your router has a 5+ Ethernet ports. I have a powerline networking kit with a built in switch. It all depends on how your house is setup. I didnt want wires everywhere so I used powerline. You can always use wireless too unless you get too much interference. If you want a switch, I would just grab a gigabit switch since they are getting cheap. Should only cost you $20. You wont need a fancy switch for this, just grab a cheap one. thumb.gif

I just looked at the list of components for this build you recommended. Looking at the case, it was mounted to back of the monitor as an option. Are you saying to build 4 of these and place at each television or build one to use as my server?

One for each TV, but I personally wouldn't run Windows, I would run XBMC.

And have all of your movies/media centralized on one PC/Server. Maybe something with a 3TB HDD or more depending on how much media you have.
If you have any old hardware, that will be great for a File server, it doesnt need much.
