Macbook pro (2011?) will not install OS

Thread Starter
I am currently trying to reinstall OSX on a Macbook that my work recently acquired. It boots up to the OS fine, but I need to wipe everything and reinstall because it's being used for a business. I have an install image on a USB drive as well as a genuine Snow Leopard install disc, and when I try to boot from those devices by holding option and selecting that disc, it just gives me the gray apple screen and never moves from there. I'm not sure what would be causing this and am not that knowledgeable in the world of Macs.

Anybody seen this before? I'm trying to find answers from anywhere else too and I can't find anybody who has seen this issue.

In my experience, that gray screen means it doesn't like some sort of hardware. Is anything plugged into the PC, even if it's just an external HDD? If so, try unplugging them and trying.

Nah it's just the power cord, no other devices. Even when I try to run the DVD from OSX and install from there, when it reboots, it still sticks on that gray apple screen.

EDIT: Also I tried clearing/resetting the NVRAM and that didn't seem to change anything.

If you are trying to install OS X 10.6 onto the machine, it will require you to do the following:

Put your machine into Target mode.
Connect to an older Macbook with FireWire.
Boot OS X Installation Media on older Macbook.
Reformat and install to targeted MacBook.
After install, boot from the old mac with the new mac still connected.
Install updates.
Unplug and boot new mac normally.

What MacBook Pro is this? Early, Mid, or Late 2011?

Nothing worked, but it's cool because it's still in warranty so we just let Apple take care of it.

Thanks though!

Is that even a machine that will take 10.6? You might just try booting with command R, selecting a network and then installing Lion from the servers.

That is what I would have done, but if he has some old PPC apps he wants to keep around, he has to stick with SL. Lion removed Rosetta support and the PPC translation libraries and kernel extensions.
