A Month Of Linux (Ubuntu 12.04 and LMDE)

Thread Starter
Hello all,

Thanks to a recent lack of interest in gaming, and finding I spend far too little time learning anything new, I have decided to quit Windows 7 cold turkey and to give Linux my best shot for the entire next month.

Even if I decide that I would rather use Windows at the end of the month time period, I would still like the basic knowledge of how a Linux based OS works, and get comfortable using it, even if I conclude it is just not for me. So my goal is to learn how to do at least one thing I was unable to do each day of this month.

I am hoping that I can get some replies to this thread with advice on things people feel are important to learn about Linux. Any and all advice is appreciated, and I will undoubtedly have quite a few questions. This should be an exciting learning experience. Thanks in advance to any contributors!! thumb.gif

Thanks I am sure as I get deeper into the world of Linux, a lot of questions will be posted. But I also know how to use google so I will try to save the questions for the stuff I really cant figure out lol thumb.gif

Is there a specific reason to use LMDE over Ubuntu 12.4? I will definitely check it out if it is the superior choice! Thanks!

Ubuntu from Windows cold turkey is going to be a little rough. Could always use a Live install of Ubuntu on a USB stick and get a feel for the OS. I just recently starting using Ubuntu 12.04 on an inexpensive secondary PC and it took me 15 mins just to get a temperature monitoring app installed, configured, and running properly redface.gif

Probably better that way though.

I tried dual-booting once, but Windows 7 was the default on GRUB, and I just let it boot into that. Never touched Ubuntu much.

I had to force myself, and it seems he is too. Good luck!

I just found, installed, and configured a CPU / GPU / HDD / etc temperature monitoring program in less than 3 minutes on 12.04. In software center, I searched 'cpu temperature,' then selected the first result.

Yeah, if I dont just dump windows cold turkey, I would probably go back to it in a moment of frustration. I learn best when I am forced into learning something haha but it is also an interest of mine, so that should make it easier biggrin.gif

Check out WINE / wine tricks early in case you get the urge to play a couple games. You won't be tempted to sneak windows time in there.

A complete beginner would need longer to get it done. The first temp program that popped up from the Ubuntu Center for me was PSensor. Installing it from the software center on a clean install of 12.04 gives you CPU Usage, no other temperatures or readings. So then you have to go to the terminal, install the right sensor package, run it, scan, add, reboot- and that doesn't even include the time spent Googling all the instructions.
