Mounting old cooler on a 5770 - connector issues - need some advice!

I'm gonna keep this short, it's close to bedtime and i have to wake up early in the morning - I will revise the thread tomorrow and add more details!

I recently acquired an Asus Cucore 5770, and well, the cooler isn't good. In fact, I kind of dislike it... It's loud, doesn't cool properly, so on so forth.
However, I have a cooler from my old 4850 PCS+. It's pretty silent, and has good performance, two heatpipes and copper fins. The mounting screws are adaptable to the smaller size of the 5770 pcb, so that's great! However, the original fan connector was a mini 2-pin header, while the 5770's is a mini 3-pin header.

The issues don't end here - My PCS+ cooler doesn't even have the header, it had to be cut off because of reasons. Other than the header, everything fits! It even allows some space to add Vram sinks, whereas the cucore one does not.

I was wondering, what's the best way to mod that cooler's power header! I thought of adding a regular 3-pin to the wires and connecting it directly to the psu, but, would the card work with no fan connected to it's socket?

Long story short, i need some creative solutions here! Thanks in advance. wink.gif

Just supply power to the red and black.

Do you know how to solder?

Sure, I have all the tools and know how to properly solder it, just need to buy some heat shrink tubing, I ran out. I'm gonna add a regular 3 pin and connect to directly to the psu, and see how it goes (i've heard some cards don't boot with the fan disconnected, will check once I get home). I assume the fan is 12v, but the sticker on the back should clarify that.

I've heard you should only connect similar fans to the ones that come from factory in the dedicated gpu slot anyway, since it may cause trouble with the driver speed detection.

What bothers me is it's mainly that i'll loose the fan profiles, it's gonna run @ 100% all the time. It's fairly silent, but the ammount of air it shifts makes some noise of it's own.

Something like this would probably solve it though, if i'm not mistaken. Maybe i'll get one later down the road.

Might as well get one of these if i can find them this cheap around here, at least it has enough channels to control most of my case fans.

Will update this once I solder it to let you know.

Update: I just did it, the fan is rated at 12vdc, however i don't think it's running at full speed for some reason (might just be me). It's connected to a 3 pin directly from the psu.

http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g47/c251/s634/list/p1/Fan_Accessories-Fan_Cables-3_Pin_Adapters-Page1.html

here is the page for fan adpters i bought.
I bought the wrong one but the little plastic header on the video card usually comes off .. its held in by the pins. remember the orientation of the slot or opening. the cable has the corresponding one or two ridges that fit in the opening so you dont plug the fan in backwords. if the slot or opening faces the power conector edge of the card ( as mine did)  thats how i remembered. just plug the fan cable with the ridges twoard the edge of the board where the power supply connector is. ( if thats how your card is set up)
however if you are going thru all of this... take a look at the red mod. people are putting closed loop coolers on their gpu chips. They work much better than stock and are quiet compared to any cards people have used so far. Yes even the newest ones. You can sometimes find these used but new they can be had around 50.00 on a good buy.
here is the link.

running straight from the psu it will run full speed. You have to put it on the gpu fan connector to get it to run with the card temps.
one of those adapters will make the hookup easy.. They might even sell one with just wires. or just grab one off a old gpu fan.

Yeah, it was properly connected I double checked with a multimeter, it really was just me. The fan was a little less noisy than usual, but that's probably because i popped the blades out and cleaned and relubed the sleeve bearing.

All in all it wasn't really worth it, even with the cooler being full copper and having 2 heatpipes it somehow doesn't do as good as the cucore one. Probably due to having less surface area (it's weird anyway, i thought a 4850 would heat up more than a 5770, i know for a fact it uses more power especially when Oced). Well, anyway now I have a spare gpu cooler in case i ever need one, you can't go wrong with that!

I removed the plastic shroud from the cucore cooler and it's MUCH less noisier now, and it cools much better anyway! Some tip I saw floating around forums. I think the air "whistled" through the plastic grid at high speeds.

I'd post a pic, but unfortunately my smartphone's LCD needs a replacement which i haven't for around to ordering yet, so i'm rocking a spare low budget for now.

I'll still need to lap the cucore cooler eventually, it has some factory defects at the copper rod base. Heard that was common with this model, i'll get around to doing it later down the road.

Thanks for the help everyone!

cool..If you are happy we are happy. You might look in the marketpace here if you are ever in the market for an upgrade. Im still learning the forums but a lot of people have been happy with stuff they get from other members and saved some cash in the process.
Btw that was a pretty ambitious project. Ill be looking for some cool mods from you in the future.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it man ^^. I'd do a lot more modding around if I had more spare parts/systems, the thing is, right now i'm going to college and money is an issue and so is time. The case i'm currently using was modded from an old mid tower case, added some acrylic windows, paintjob, it's nothing fancy but yeah, i do have a tendency to mod things around if i have the tools/time/money!

And yeah, I should go snoop around in the marketplace if I ever need some upgrades. The community seems trustworthy, and not only do you save cash, reusing parts is also environmentally friendly in a way i guess. Thanks for the advice smile.gif.
