I issue a challenge - $500 new build

OK, I have a buddy who budgeted $350 for MOBO, CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD

He wants me to build him a "nice, upgradeable and preferable dual core" box.

His main requirements are S/PDIF Out to run Digital to his AV Reciever, and DVI to push his HDTV.

I laughed, and talked him up to $500.

Who can put together the, best performing, cheapest components, Intel or AMD, for around $500, the lower the better with this cheapskate.

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133172

Total: $429

I gave him DDR2-800 and an 805, which should overclock very well. Should be a decent rig actually. 7300GT as the GPU (pretty strong card actually) and a 160GB seagate HDD with perpendicular write technology. Mobo is a 945P epox board.

Well, if he can go to $550 by any chance, he can get a decent AM2 rig, which is upgradeable and performs well.

160 GB HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144415
ABIT KN9: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127010

Opteron 1210: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819105015

After MIR, that's $530... if he can scrape up to that, he'd have a pretty good rig on his hands.

I would go with bigval's setup, but get a board that supports C2D for a future upgrade. Or, just spend 60 more bucks and get a C2D, and another 25 for the C2D Gigabyte S3 board that will OC better than the epox. Which is the best $500 setup your going to find.

Agreed. Get Bigval's rig, and replace the motherboard with the Gigabyte GA-965P-S3, which costs $115.99. The cheapest Core 2 Duo (E6300) will be $88 extra though, which will push the budget a bit too much over $500.

Thus, pick out the parts Bigval suggested, and replace the mobo with the Gigabyte S3. Total will be $455 + shipping

Good luck

So you guys are saying twist his arm and just build my rig for him?

I'd be doubling his original budget.

I did spend a month researching mine to build what I thought was the best budget rig for the money, though.

Will the GSkill in Bigval's rig, post on the S3?

I know there were issues with certain RAM and my DS3 when I was researching a couple months ago.

Voltage 1.8V-2.0V

Therefore, I think so. It might be a problem but since the ram will default to slower speeds anyways, it should be fine at that posting voltage.

I totally forgot about the S3 board! I agree with these guys. Get the parts I posted but with a gigabyte S3 board.
