[WSJ] Best Buy Plays Web Hardball : Retailer Will Match Online Prices, Shrugs off 'Showrooming' - Page 3

The peace of mind in just being able to buy it and not worry on how you're going to receive it is pretty great.

This isn't an "us versus them" ie B+M versus online argument. They can both co-exist. Currently, online stores have a heavy advantage in terms of taxation that B+M do not have, so it isn't fair competition exactly. As a consumer, this makes me happy because I can buy stuff from amazon on the cheap, but thinking objectively I know that it isn't a fair system. Eventually, all states will tax such transactions so it will be a moot point going forward. Again, online stores and B+M will become more on equal footing in the future - B+M stores have to make things more convenient and have better selection with hybrid online shipping (which is what best buy plans to do).

I like both B+M and online shopping. Personally, I'm glad that best buy is trying to adapt. Again, anyone thinking rationally and objectively would admit that online stores have numerous advantages in terms of taxations, which is a large part of why people buy so much online. There are other things as well such as selection, convenience, which B+M stores will have to address -- and it appears best buy is doing just that. They are adding hybrid online shopping to stores with same day delivery. That is exactly what they need to do IMO.

For me personally I buy online primarily because of tax and selection only. Keep in mind that this will not last forever -- all states will eventually force tax for online transactions for all online stores. Once that advantage goes away (tax + selection), I would do a lot more shopping at B+M. I don't mind best buy at all and the continuing demonization of all B+M stores is confusing to me. Sounds like some people don't even like to go outside.

In other words, I'll believe it when I see it.
This. I got this before too.
It funny enough I was matching future shop.

If they actually start doing this, I might actually start buying stuff from BB again ... instead of just going in for "emergency" items or "kicking the tires".

Who knows, maybe the price of their "Monster Cables" will come down too. biggrin.gif

Monster Cable - Digital Life 8 ft HDMI Data Transfer Cable ... Model: DL HDMI A/C-8 ... $79.99 @ Best Buy .... $39.99 at Newegg.com

My BB can't even compete with stores like Wal-Mart which is right down the road. Walked in looking for an Avengers blu-ray, they wanted $25, down the road at Wally's it was $20. The 4 disc combo was $7 cheaper at Wally's and the service was just as crappy.

It's not just the stores. The salespeople in Best buy are dumb as he**

You must live in the south, I've only heard the term "wallys" while living in SC.

I'm from NH, but I went to school in SC. My friends occassionally called it "Wally World," which always reminded me of Walley World from National Lampoon's Vacation.

The problem with Best Buy has never been price matching. They have done that for years, haven't they?
The real problem is that they have 'Best Buy exclusives'. For example, you might be looking at a laptop that is $699.00 on Amazon. Best Buy might have the same laptop but it has 6GB of RAM instead of 8GB and call it a 'Best Buy Exclusive'. Then they charge you $749.00 for it and refuse to price match a higher spec'd, cheaper laptop based on the fact that the Amazon one is a different sku. While technically true, the practice is asinine. Why on earth would I pay more for a computer that has lesser specs just because it is a 'Best Buy Exclusive'? Not to mention the fact that what seems to be every damn laptop in Best Buy (in Canada, at least) has one of those damn bilingual keyboards. Instant deal-breaker no matter the price difference.

Those are the reasons that Best Buy will always be a showroom for me.
