AMD Build

Hello everyone,

It's been years since I last logged in here and longer since I owned a performance PC, so I need your help please.

Below is a build I've put together and I would really appreciate your input; anything better for the money, any shortfalls, any missing equipment, etc...this is a full build minus monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.

Sapphire HD 7850 2048MB

AMD Bulldozer FX-8 Eight Core 8150 Black Edition

Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX

Akasa Venom 750w Modular '80 Plus' Power Supply

Lian Li PC-6B Case - Black

OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD (x2 Raid 0)

TeamGroup Elite 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel

Prolimatech Samuel 17 CPU Cooler (w/ Akasa AK-FN059 120mm Ultra Quiet Venom)

Samsung SH-118AB/BEBE SATA 18x DVD-ROM

Akasa AK-FN063 140mm Ultra Quiet Viper Cool Fan (front of case)

Akasa AK-FN059 120mm Ultra Quiet Venom Viper Cool Fan (rear of case)

I'm looking to play games at high-highest settings and may add another GPU at some point (if the rest of the system can keep up), but for now I want to keep costs reasonable.

Thanks in advance for your help...and hello to any older members who are still here and may remember me.

Cheers

i would wait for piledriver to come out, it looks as though it is going to out perform BD by a bit.

AMD has a crap raid card, and i dont think that an amd build could do raid ssds. anyway, i would get something like the vertex 4, or samsung 840 instead.

for the ram, get the samsung "wonder" ram if you can. here is a link to the stuff

i have never heard of those power supplies, but i would stick to Antec, XFX, Corsair, Seasonic, and Silverstone.

besides that, the build looks good.

Thank you mate, noted.

Already swapped out the memory and looking at other SSD now.

I've always had Akasa PSU's and never let me down so will stick with it.

Any news on when the Piledriver is coming?

By the end of this month in all probability smile.gif

As for the PSU, this'd be my personal choice - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182071

If this is just a gaming rig, you will not need anything over a quad core for current games. Since most games are still single threaded and dual threaded having more cores does not normally benefit.

Also, the 8120 and the 8150 perform very close to the same when overclocked. The 8150 is not worth the premium. If you do not plan on overclocking, you should be looking into an i5 or a PIIx4

Grab a 2x4GB kit of RAM, games will not be using more than 8 GB even in the near future. I have not heard of that PSU, it might be good. But I have never heard of it. Do not Raid 0 ssds. AFAIK AMD's chipset does not support it properly yet. Also, grab a single 128GB ssd. More space on the SSD is a waste. You can use applications like steam mover to free space on your SSD and move things to your HDD. The Agility 3 is a sort of bad SSD as well. Atleast go for a Vertex 4 if you want to stay with OCZ. OR grab a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830.

These changes should allow you to up your GPU to a better one, hopefully a 7950. In the US it tends to be the best bang/buck card.

Ok, had a play with the build overnight, spent a bit more money (in my head anyway) and came up with the below.

HIS HD 7970 3072MB

Asus X79 Sabertooth

Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz

Corsair Dominator GT 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C9 2133MHz

OCZ Vertex 4 256GB

Akasa Venom 750w

Lian Li PC-6B Case

Intel Liquid Cooling Solution CPU Cooler

Akasa AK-FN063 140mm Ultra Quiet Viper Cool Fan

Samsung SH-118AB/BEBE SATA 18x DVD-ROM

Akasa AK-FN059 120mm Ultra Quiet Venom Viper Cool Fan

How is that build? I know there is a lot of memory and could probably cut it down to 8GB...Any comments would be appreciated.
