Sick Socket-A HSF Needed

Thread Starter
Hey all, I'm building a Socket-A "throwback" rig. It's a XP-M running on a Abit nf7-s board. K so the motherboard has the 4 holes on it so what "modern" HSFs would fit on there? I checked the Socket-A sections of Xoxide and so far I'm leaning towards the Big Typhoon. Will any newer/better HSFs fit on this board that you guys recommend? I prefer something w/ a 120mm fan (90mm if I have to), money is no object but it has to be air for this rig.

The Thermalright SI-97 is very good, but I'm willing to bet the Big Typhoon will be cooler. SI-97 was once the king of s462, though.

There is also the Thermaltake Volcano 12 and Zalman CNPS 7700CU. A lapped Thermaltake Silent Tower is also an option, although many motherboards can't handle the weight and fans have to be jerry-rigged. A beast of a heatsink though, easily a contender although the BT is probably better than just about anything.

SI-97 or CNPS7000-Cu would be your bests bet

I've heard that the BT fits for S462, but I can't confirm that :/

that really hurts lol, ur "throwback" rig is going to be like my only rig lol. i got nf7-s and an xp-m 2500+. i recently bought a new hsf fan for it and i would swear by it. the aerocool ht-101 is amazing. stuck 2 fans on it one sucking one blowing. lowered my temps from 60+ load to bout 34c load and thats with it oced from 1.86 to 2.2ghz. theres also an ht-102 that is a little larger but i went with the 101 and it works great. i got 2 80mm masscools on mine

Oh I forgot to mention that I won't be using a case (at first). I'm gonna leave the rig on the desk so I don't care about the weight. What about a good old XP-120?

LOL within reason of course. Compared to water cooling which can cost hundreds, spending anywhere between $30-60 on air isn't really a problem.

I really wanted to do some crazy fan ducting but I don't have room (or a budget) for a second case right now.

Another vote for the Big Typhoon. I'm running that exact same setup right now - Big Typhoon on NF7-S board laying right on top of my desk. It does a really really good job of keeping the temps down, even at 2.5ghz, and it does it silently. Installation was quick and painless. It just looks really intimidating because the socket looks soooo small in comparison the the Big Typhoon.

Nice, thanks for the replies guys. I ordered the Big Typhoon along with a bunch of other goodies. I got a black Lite-On DVD burner for $29 and a dual 12v rail, 38A Forton PSU for $34, that's a steal.
