iMac as second display

Thread Starter
I just got hold of a 27" imac and wanted to see if I could use it as a 2nd monitor for my pc, I just bought a mini displayport to DVI assuming I could just plug it in and its not working, I've read everywhere and have heard a lot about 'target display mode', its not activating automatically is there any way to manually activate it and is there any other way to use it as a second screen for gaming etc.

two monitors for gaming no good. your person or objective will always be in the middle of the two. as for your actual problem i would look around in the mac forums for your answer also I am sure you have set it to something in mac settings to use it as a second monitor

There are two models of the 27" iMac; the ones with Thunderbolt, and those without.

For those with Thunderbolt, they can only be used as an external monitor for a Thunderbolt-equipped machine (basically, a recent Mac). For those without, you *have* to use a DisplayPort source - passive adaptors won't work. I don't think anyone makes an active DVI to DP signal converter, unfortunately.
