[FIXED] 3960X D1 BSOD 4.6GHz

Hi all,

Been trying to get my overclock stable on this chip but getting nowhere!!!

On an ASUS P9X79 Deluxe with 4x4GB Vengeance

Pics:

Oo5Rh.jpg
IEOHX.jpg
5WCYT.jpg

Consistently getting D1 BSOD with storport.sys driver mentioned, at around the same FFT length of prime95 every time.

Have set prime to blend then custom 14000MB RAM.

Dying around the same place every time, usually at: 672K 21K or 768K

Have tried increasing VTT significantly (to around 1.13 i think) which seemed to make prime last a little longer but still not much.

Any help would be insanely appreciated!!!

Using Dark Rock Pro Cooler on max speed whilst running prime, temps hitting about 81 max

Set VCCSA to auto, PLL to 1.8 (low as it goes) upped vcore a notch still no good! Passed 768k so must have failed on 25K
Tried different ram aswell so dont think its that, this is crazy! frown.gif

EDIT:

started from scratch with settings, when setting to XMP, i noticed it set my VCCSA to 1.2V (this didnt happen before because i had already set a value) am running prime at 4.7GHz and have gotten much further and still running so fingers crossed. Annoyed i didnt get a better cooler as i dont really want to take this any higher because of temps in prime hitting around 85 on a couple of cores, also 1.43V should be a fairly safe voltage to keep this at 24/7

get a H100 with 40 fans tongue.gif you will **** bricks when you see the temps
but you are going to get a 3970X (which is the same cpu as the 3960X but with a 100mhz (1MP) increased and a vcore increase as well)

unfortunately h100 isnt an option with my case (rv01) in terms of mounting. starting to regret getting this case as its pretty poor for cooling anyway!

could potentially do a custom loop but the rad has to hang off the back of the case which probably looks a bit lame, and im too lazy to maintain water cooling tongue.gif

going to wait for a new air cooler that is a beast but doesnt look silly tongue.gif

Did your overclock work out?

Note: Your cooler is in the top Air coolers and I'm surprised it can handle a 3960X @ 1.43v thumb.gif

Hey! Yeah it seems great now, was the vccsa not being high enough, such a relief after endless banging my head against the desk!!

Yeah its a decent cooler but the mounting for this socket seems budget, cant imagine it creates much pressure, flatmate has a massive thermalright on his 3960X and gets considerably better temps with the fans on low speed compared to me running mine on max whilst testing! Oh well at least this cooler looks quite nice!
