Overclocked they are about the same or the 7970 is slightly better at 1080p.

It's usually not by a significant margin unless you are on triple monitors or 1440p with high AA.

Refer to sig. reviews. In addition, I have a 7950 at 1280/1800 and I've also had 3 7970s and all 4 would lose to my current 680 Lightning which I'll admit is the only 680 worth buying.

I'd wait until I see a 8970 review(probably December, 7970 review came out late December last year) before committing either way, late December would be around the time retailers slash price on 7XXX cards to clear spaces for 8XXX anyway.

If you wait until now... Wait a little longer for the HD 8 series!!
Wait to see their performance, or, you'll have a price drop on the HD 7 seires!! biggrin.gif

This I think could go 2 ways:

1. Must get GPU now, my card is not good enough for the next 3 month:

Get a 7870/7950 now, then either get another when their price drop or sell(do it in late December before the price drops) and get a Sea Island

2. My 6970 is OK, but I wanted to upgrade:

Wait until the new cards comes out and either get new or get a 7970 after price drop.

Either way getting a flagship card(7970/Ghz) right now is not the best user of your money, but in his scenario he definitely should wait.
